    A paper that some may find scientifically illuminating: "On the reception and detection of pseudo-profound bullshit"
    The paper gives a working definition of bullshit, details 4 experiments carried out on the ability of participants to detect pseudo-profound statements (i.e "Wholeness quiets infinite phenomena" or anything from Deepak Chopra's twitter feed), as well as how receptive participants were to accepting such pseudo-profundities, and based on this data, gives an interpretation as to what mechanisms underlie a person's ability to detect bullshit, or conversely, accept it as truth. The study finds that people who ascribe profundity to bullshit statements are more likely to believe in the paranormal, more likely to accept conspiracy theories, and more likely to endorse alternative medicines.

    • ugh I was hoping it was a science paper. kinda of a survey.yurimon
    • were you in it?drgs
    • A survey is scientific.monospaced
    • Survey is mostly political. they set the desired parameters. You could do this with any group you want to target.yurimon
    • I was hoping this would disprove something scientifically. real science.yurimon
    • of course yurimon is defending bullshitscarabin
    • a political poll is still data, yurimon, and data is the basis of any scientific approach. derpmonospaced
    • You can label parameters any way you wish in data collection. I would love real scientific on biased research not a survey to disprove, big difference.yurimon
    • Not exactly. You can interpret data in different ways to show a preconceived bias, but the data itself is inherently unbiased.monospaced
    • not if you start with bias in the parameters. If it started with first disproving the actual parameters with solid science, or proof. not thesis, or theories.yurimon
    • this survey just basically shows peoples preference, its as scientific as netflix recommending you movies.yurimon
    • you're making very vague, sweeping statements that make you look like you haven't even read the article. read it and cite specific flaws in their method.scarabin
    • if you feel there are biases, point out specific examples. if you feel they are interpreting the gathered data incorrectly, cite specific examples.scarabin
    • right now you're just making knee-jerk, emotional statements based on a feeling of being threatened.scarabin
    • I read the paper. I'll post it for you. I didnt highlight what I thought was wrong so I'll reread it for you. ok give me few.yurimon
    • I think what yurimon is saying is that those statements aren't bullshit in the first place. He actually considers it profound, and sees a bias in calling it bsmonospaced
    • if that's the case, then we really shouldn't be discussing this with himmonospaced
    • I'm not accusing the issue as bs. My question is a challenge of understanding, not only mine but all of yours. That is why I am asking what would be the basisyurimon
    • of you supporting bernies solutions or anybody elses in this issue. what is the history of this in fact to lead to current crisis. its not an over night thing.yurimon
    • oops wrong thread. hahahayurimon
    • No what I got out of the paper is that they laid a ground work of parameters of what they consider bullshit. they described what they think is bullshit asideyurimon
    • random generated messages. its doesnt disprove paranormal activity with science like i was hoping. they just said if you believe this your more likely to believyurimon
    • this idea.yurimon
    • its a fucken survey.yurimon
    • so yeah, you're right mono. he's literally defending the bullshit itself. lol.scarabin
    • cats, defined as not cool. Dogs defined as cool.
      q: do you have a cat? a: yes
      q: do live alone a: yes
      yurimon
    • conclusion, people who live alone are likely to be not cool.yurimon
    • conclusion, yurimon believes the bullshitmonospaced

    • you think global warming is propaganda? dude, it's pure science, and religion offers NOTHING on the subjectmonospaced
    • The argument against global warming is more twisted and complex than the scientific reality of global warming.IRNlun6
    • yeah, but the twist of the issue is agenda based politics,yurimon
    • what the fuck is religion's agenda when it comes to global warming, yurimon!?monospaced
    • polital or otherwise? they're the ones twisting itmonospaced
    • Which is exactly the point yuri. The science behind is very straight forward. The agenda to dismiss it brings basic science into question.IRNlun6

    gonna put this to bed real quick. Yuri posted this comment "look at the jama study. seems to be some professional opposition."

    ok, i'm game, i have an hour and a half to kill

    http://jamanetwork.com/solr/sear…

    2 links came up in the search autism vaccines

    first study;
    http://jama.jamanetwork.com/arti…

    the very first couple of lines;

    'Despite research showing no link between the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), beliefs that the vaccine causes autism persist, leading to lower vaccination levels.'

    conclusion;
    'Conclusions and Relevance In this large sample of privately insured children with older siblings, receipt of the MMR vaccine was not associated with increased risk of ASD, regardless of whether older siblings had ASD. These findings indicate no harmful association between MMR vaccine receipt and ASD even among children already at higher risk for ASD.'

    ok, now the second article which touches on set's dreaded mercury shenanigans;

    http://jama.jamanetwork.com/arti…

    i'll cut to the chase;
    'In conclusion, our results are not compatible with the hypothesis of a causal association between thimerosal and autistic-spectrum disorders.'

    and before anyone tries to get all semantic troll about the wording, here;
    http://medical-dictionary.thefre…

    third article addresses the supposed incriminating timeline that everyone waves around implying that vaccinations coincide with a upswing in autism.;

    http://archpedi.jamanetwork.com/…

    conclusion;
    'Changes in reporting practices can account for most (60%) of the increase in the observed prevalence of ASDs in children born from 1980 through 1991 in Denmark. Hence, the study supports the argument that the apparent increase in ASDs in recent years is in large part attributable to changes in reporting practices.'

    yes yes, denmark, i know. well here is a study done in california;

    http://jama.jamanetwork.com/arti…

    conclusion;
    'The lack of correspondence between the trends in MMR coverage and numbers of autistic disorder cases does not support the hypothesis that increasingly widespread MMR immunization of young children is associated with the marked secular trend of increasing numbers of autism cases enrolled in the California Department of Developmental Services regional service center system.'

    This vaccination discussion is a tad more complicated than just "for" or "against". That's like people saying you are 100% democrat or republican, or worse the infamous "if you aren't with us, you are against us".

    I am in the "no absolutes" category and believe there is good and bad. Obviously, vaccinations have done wonders as have anti-biotics. But look at a-b's now, walk into a Kaiser waiting room and they have charts everywhere about how the overuse has created an epidemic. Until recently, that was witchcraft/conspiracy thinking.

    Then there's the dollars. JNJ just created a ebola vaccine. That's great, but it also means crazy dollars (and their stock shot up when it was announced, which is nice, 'cause I own it ;-) ).

    Point being, there is no altruistic vision being done at JNJ, it's about dollars. Flu vaccine had a 23% success rate last year. But the dollars made? Globally $24 billion.

    There's also enough cases of horrible side effects. The H1N1 vaccine causing narcolepsy is a pretty large thing to overlook. As an autoimmune disease that is triggered by external events, that suggests other autoimmune problems could be triggered as well.

    Like modern medicine vs. acupuncture, etc., there is a place for everything. Whenever there are billions to be made, there's questions to be raised.

    Again, no absolutes.

    • Agreed. On a case by case basis vaccines/drugs require the highest scrutiny otherwise you get disasters like Thalidomide. However, suggesting that 'Vaccines'...Morning_star
    • ...are generically 'Bad' and the distribution is some government control conspiracy is just fantasy.Morning_star
    • Not a suggestion. Just seeing more people getting damaged. I'm thinking its a quality issue. seems that they put garbage into the vaccines to get a higheryurimon

    ^ There's a recent SGU (Skeptics Guide to the Universe) podcast that deals with the issue of the media and Science. It's enlightening - the SGU folk essentially offer the conclusion that most of 'science' reporting is bollocks.
    Due to the way that mass media is consumed - in simple, bite-size, easy to understand packets - portraying a complex story about stem cell research, for instance, falls victim to the way it HAS to be written. Facts are left out, concepts are diluted and everyman language is used, none of which supports the nuances and subtleties that the original scientific paper.
    I also think that the more challenging news regarding ESP, NDE, Non-locality research et.c falls foul of the same lowest common denominator treatment.

    • science consumption is a big issue i think, it borders on infotainment. Most people would not follow up or investigate. i thinkyurimon
    • Tru. The problem is that the Science Media think they're owed the same authority as the Scientists themselves - even though they do more to confuse public opinion about science than anyone else.Morning_star
    • confuse public opinion about science than anyone else.Morning_star

    • It's tru that they are a little lazy or dogmatic when it comes to things more 'fringe' but their opponents fall foul of the same. I'm thinking of Skeptiko BTW.Morning_star
