Everything they've shown have been stylistic renditions of what their currently use. Like using a name brand cologne and then, for no reason, trying out a different off-brand but similarly-scented version of what they already have a real Bottle of - and then telling everyone they know about it.
My hope is that this was just some fun afternoon exploration they had the design interns do. The real ID (and BRAND!!!) update should reflect their new, and considerable, strategy to focus on mobile. It should encompass the NEW yahoo. For god's sake, does anyone ever say, over there, "what the fuck are we putting out there that represents us?".
To address some of the other posts - these are not modern. At best they are d-level referential executions with no reverence for the brands they're copying the typefaces of. "Modern" isn't an aesthetic, it's a fucking way of life.

Let's get all our 1st year interns and have them draw logos and maybe people will notice us.

Yeah talk about diluting your brand and confusing people...
It's like they're saying, hey we have no idea what our brand is so we'll take a crack at it 30 times and see what you think.Bad Idea!

Some say it takes around 30 days to build a new habit. This will make People come to our website every day for 30 days to see the new logo. After it's over, they will have built a habit of coming to the Yahoo.com and start coming there without knowing it. We will become the biggest search engine in the world!!!!!
- *evil laugh here*... how many days to break a habit?ohhhhhsnap

The weird (almost insulting) part, is that they all suck.

It also says "yeah, the logo is throw away" and that it's this autonomous piece of "marketing" out there that does have to live within, nor does it foster, a brand SYSTEM.
I work at a big agency. I get 'quick logo' assignments all the time. It's very frustrating...
