We are redoing our site and I am cutting images...
Question is to retina or not?
Images double the size and thus double the load time...
I dont want to not retina for the norm to be retina in like 6 months and have to do the fucker all again... Your thoughts

Might as well quadruple them (that's what Retina is) and be ready, right?
- 2x, not quadrupled_rek
- 2x vertical, 2x horizontal = QUADRUPLEmonospaced
- But you don't author the content at 4x the size.d_rek

- derpd_rek
- Yes, of course you do. If you want the image Retina, you have to quadruple its area.monospaced
- You get quad pixel density by doubling the dimensions. Math.ETM
- 800x800 = 640,000
1600x1600 = 2,560,000ETM - it's okay guys, saying the truth only makes mono look like a retard, but for you it's just truthmonospaced
- I math not cand_rek
- You look like a retard because of your over-protective fanboy-ismd_rek
- and what fanboyism is that? where I rip on Apple and praise Android?monospaced
- or where I explain to idiots how to do basic math?monospaced
- The part where you attempt to talk down to people on the internetd_rek
- like you've been doing to me non-stop? don't be such a hypocritemonospaced
- and my comment here, to the left, is NOT talking down!monospaced
- Are you going to be ok?d_rek
- Maybe you better take a break from this whole 'internet' thing for a while Monod_rek
- hahamonospaced
- maybe you should take an elementary maths classmonospaced
- mono, i hope your marriage makes you a happier person.doesnotexist
- you do realize, doesnotexist, that this exchange happened here years and years ago, right?monospaced

I'd say this whole question of load times is becoming increasingly moot, with broadband, to be honest. Well, that is, unless you're trying to stream in a whole feature film (which would be silly!).
In any case, as far as I know, retina is an Apple-only thing for now, not a standard as such. I'd have a look to see how many iPad and iPhone hits you get over the last, say, 365 days, and decide what your threshold should be for yes or no.
- Retina is apple only, but many devices are HiDPId_rek
- Uhhh, it's NOT Apple only. Chromebook has higher resolution than Retinamonospaced
- retina is apples standard for HiDPI you monkey, not everyone elsesd_rek
- What I mean is that the high-res screen isn't Apple only, derpmonospaced
- He said retina is Apple only. Which is a specific spec and trademark. He also said there are other high dpi devices.ETM
- Never mind, you already addressed that while I typed.ETM

Adaptive Images (http://adaptive-images.com/). This actually works really well for serving separate resolutions across all devices, not just mobile. Dealing with Retina displays requires a little extra code, detailed here: http://adaptive-images.com/detai…

thats 4x actually. It's 2x width + 2x height = 4x

I live in rural Ontario, Canada and believe me their is still a large number of people living in rural parts of North America & beyond who MAYBE get hi-speed internet.
Retina as a standard, even if the big guys have adopted it (& Apple even requires it of apps now) is still years off IMO.
That being said, I love the blurring of print/digital resolutions; it's been a long time coming and as the device line continues to blur, it only makes sense.
; )
- No, no. There are a few people spread out over vast areas. That's what makes it rural. :)Continuity

It's worthwhile, and I would also argue that bandwith is somewhat of a legacy argument these days.
What's more important is that you look at your visitor base and see what devices are being used to access your website. If traffic is trending toward HiDPI devices then obviously it makes sense to output your images that way. If you anticipate a jump in this traffic is also makes sense to.
Regardless, many devices are now HiDPI. Retina merely Apple's standard regarding the HiDPI conversation right now.
As with any design - context sensitive, audience appropriate design decisions should be made.
To be fair it's not like making images retina/HiDPI ready requires that much more effort on your part. It's mostly a matter of adjusting your workflow accordingly.
- correct, "Retina" is just Apple's name for HiDPI, but don't come down on us for using the term generally!monospaced
- Legacy argument, unless one lives in Upper West Bugfart, Ontario, apparently. :PContinuity

d_rek - fair play... Problem is quite a lot of our existing content is going to be a struggle if that makes sense...
Thanks though...

There are NUMEROUS ways around this. @2x file name modifier, simple scripts to detect what image to serve etc. Making every image massive and serving when unneeded is assinine, broadband or not. Are you sending these pics to mobile too? Even a high dpi mobile device doesn't need the 2000px wide image, so you generate a couple versions either with a macro or with a plugin if you are using a CMS to upload to.

If you only have mostly little graphics (logo, icons and shit) on the site, serving only the big one is no big deal. if we're talking big pictures, then serve different images accordingly.

Go x1.5 — looks good enough on Retina and doesn't increase load times too much.

check out http://adaptive-images.com/
I think it's the best option.

^ what he said above. And slow uptake aside from Apple.

Let me see if I can explain this weird thing that is happening to my retina display 27'' imac...
I am working on illustrator, using the dark grey application background. I happen to have a document with a black background and a white shape on top of it. I keep the window in the same place, meaning the black shape with the white thing on top for some time, let's say 10 minutes, and then, when I scroll around the document, the shape remains in the dark grey app background.
It stays there for like 15 seconds, slowly fading away. How weird is that? I tried taking a screen-shot but it does not show. It must be some kind of hardware glitch on the retina, like when you stare at a light bulb for some seconds and keep seeing the filament when you look in other direction.
I tried to google it but found nothing. Any ideas?
