    It's worthwhile, and I would also argue that bandwith is somewhat of a legacy argument these days.

    What's more important is that you look at your visitor base and see what devices are being used to access your website. If traffic is trending toward HiDPI devices then obviously it makes sense to output your images that way. If you anticipate a jump in this traffic is also makes sense to.

    Regardless, many devices are now HiDPI. Retina merely Apple's standard regarding the HiDPI conversation right now.

    As with any design - context sensitive, audience appropriate design decisions should be made.

    To be fair it's not like making images retina/HiDPI ready requires that much more effort on your part. It's mostly a matter of adjusting your workflow accordingly.
