The thing I use,
- you should at least have drinking water for a week
- you should keep dry food/cans for at least a week
- an old FM battery (keep fresh batteries) radio
- something you could use as weapon
- loads of toilet paper
- alcohol to drink and clean your wounds
- a meeting place for you and your familly,
I can stress that enough, in case of disaster phone lines could be occupied or just down, make sure you've planned a meeting place where every member of your family know to get there even when you can't reach them- sorry gotta bounce soon,
there are tons of good blogs out there, just be weary of those telling you to buy coins, etcGeorgesII

Those are good tips. My wife and I have talked before about her dad's house well outside of Chicago being used as a meeting point. By car it's a little under 2 hours. On foot or other transportation it'd be far longer. We probably need something a little closer in to Chicago as an initial meeting point (I work in the loop downtown, she works north of here about 7 miles, our house is closer to her than me).
- no matter what you chose, make sure only you, your wife knows it, don't go around talking about your secret spot :)GeorgesII

TV has no effect on us.
Myriads of shows and movies about survival, world-ends, apocalypses and zombie infestations haven't affected us. Not one iota. As a result no one is looking at gear sites, showcasing bug-out bags in tech material and sturdy flashlights made out of titanium with 55% more lumen than last years version. No one.
Because TV can't affect us.
Not us. We're too smart.- I don't know what you're on about but I like it.inteliboy
- I ask for nothing more :)Peter
- Peter knows his disaster stuff. During the Tokyo earthquake and aftermath, he never run out of booze.raf
- 5-6 friends (and friends of friends) a night stayed at my place during the following days after the earthquake. I want to blame them for leaving me without booze at home.Peter
- blame them for leaving me without booze at home. But I've only myself to blame.
Now I make sure to stock up.Peter

I dont worry about it. It's so unbelievably rare for this to happen in the US. I have a gun. Everything else will just work itself out.

Started to put one together after all the flooding here recently. (UK)
Not zombie apocalypse survival, just not having to battle for supplies with those who leave it too late survival.

In the US sign up for a local CERT class.
http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert…Instead of preparing to shoot folks, helps put together a plan for one's self and your 'hood and provides an angle toward what to expect for different types of distasters.

This is a really good book, applicable to most people in urban/suburban areas:
http://www.amazon.com/When-All-H…Where I live, it's far more likely for me to experience a weather-related event that makes the system break down, so our preparation is primarily centered around that:
• Gas-powered generator + fuel
• Potable water (day-to-day used for beer and wine making, but anything not actively holding a ferment is always full of water)
• Lots of beer and wine (see previous)
• Freezer full of meat; pantry full of home-canned food; lots of dry goods
• Moderately-versatile first aid kit (more than a cigar box; less than something carried by an EMT)In the event of something more sinister, we're pretty well armed to the teeth.
- Who the fuck stocks beer and wine in case of an emergency?CygnusZero4
- The words are there, Cygnus. Read them all.melq
- Only thing Im reading is you're a hick.CygnusZero4
- Hick (n): a word used by dependent fools to describe those that think ahead.melq
- i was just going to recommend thissublocked
- i'm all about the wine. it will help keep you warm, alive and happy.sea_sea
- Any GoT reader knows that boiled wine is useful for cleaning any wound.Amicus

For some time now, i´m buying all the candles, pencils, paper, indian ink, watercolor and other drawing stuff i can handle... but i doubt all of them are supposed to be considered like "Disaster Preparation" items ;)
