Living in SF I've been working on a kit for a while now. Have the essentials, emergency radio/flashlight, glow sticks, spam, waterfilters, fire starter, bug out pack...
In terms of tools and weapons I'm opting for a machete (Ontario makes some decent machetes for $30 - on amazon) and I'm also considering a baretta.
I also recommend stocking up on items such as toilet wipes, seeds, alcohol... stuff that can be traded if necessary.
We have different plans on what to do if the shit hits the fan here in the yay area. Probably going to send the lady down to the folks while I bunker up at home to protect my TV and PS3...- Is that a yarmulke?waterhouse
- never leave home without it

I listened to a podcast on the topic (cannot recall the title) and it laid things out pretty well, stating that the likelihood of a "disaster" increases based on the scale of its reach. My personal thoughts on the subject are...
Personal: highly likely
Death in the family, job loss, serious illness.
This stuff happens all the time and is a big deal to those it touches, but do not really affect your neighbors, etc. This level, everyone pretty much prepares for in some fashion.Neighborhood: likely
Things that affect the area in which you live. Could be the power outage as hit several east coast states for more than a week recently, snow storms, etc. This stuff happens enough that everyone really should give it some consideration (this is the level I pretty much prepare for).Circling outward from there: possible
Without rule of law for a few days or weeks. Thanks to Hurricane Katrina and the LA riots, I can't say it'll never happen, so I respect it enough to give things a bit of thought. I just don't stress over it/invest in it.Catastrophic end-times stuff: unlikely
I limit my thoughts on this level to reading books by Stephen King and Cormac McCarthy.
