This is a really good book, applicable to most people in urban/suburban areas:
http://www.amazon.com/When-All-H…Where I live, it's far more likely for me to experience a weather-related event that makes the system break down, so our preparation is primarily centered around that:
• Gas-powered generator + fuel
• Potable water (day-to-day used for beer and wine making, but anything not actively holding a ferment is always full of water)
• Lots of beer and wine (see previous)
• Freezer full of meat; pantry full of home-canned food; lots of dry goods
• Moderately-versatile first aid kit (more than a cigar box; less than something carried by an EMT)In the event of something more sinister, we're pretty well armed to the teeth.
