Where you at?

I'm 28, enjoy my job, and am making strides towards furthering my career, but I'm not quite as 'far along' as I thought I would be at this point (youthful ignorance accounted for). Just curious as to how others view themselves and their gains. Where you wanted to be right now? **I've been day drinking, and thus reflecting.

29.
i spent most of my 20s fucking around, mostly unemployed, going to grad school, moving between coasts four or five times while most of my friends slaved away in jobs they hated. i got my first "real" job as a production designer 2.5 years ago and am now art director.
so i guess things are going okay; i'm moving back to portland this month, the only town i've ever felt at home in. i've never cared about career / money / etc., so i'm more excited about starting some more art-based projects. although it's been fun sort of discovering the corporate world i turned down at 22. can't say i'll miss it, though.

I hear ya colin -- more or less the same here. I care about my career -- but not in the sense of money/promotions/etc., I just want to be happy. I'm sort of glad I fucked around the way I did, the friends that I have that didn't and jumped straight into corporate america are probably a little bit better off financially but they don't seem any happier. I guess I just feel old,

28. Have a 7 month old daughter who brought immense joy and also a sense of purpose outside of a 'career' in life. Bought a house. Working a steady in-house gig with good pay, benefits and the occasional portfolio-worthy project. I'm engaged, but not married (hello 2013). I am able to pay all of my bills. I am able to keep my family fed, clothed, and sheltered. I keep a separate refrigerator in my basement for my craft beer exploits. Life is good.
I am probably about as 'far along' as i'll ever be in this life. Everything after this I imagine is going to be purely incremental - a bigger salary, a bigger house, a nicer neighborhood, a nicer car.
Life is good.

Finishing my master's studies in a foreign country...trying to get into one company to work full-time. I interned there, and now it's all about will they call me to work or not...so far so good, I have a girlfriend for 6 years now...I work as a photographer for airbnb, so when there is a gig around, it's an easy money opportunity (which I don't pass)...just want to get a full-time job together with a work-permit, and I am all done with ambitions really...

No idea, honestly, as to where I thought I'd be at this point in my life in terms of career. I'm happy with where I'm at, but I spend a lot more time thinking about what I'd like to do next. Want to pursue starting a web site / business idea that I've been thinking about for a few years. Want to get involved with a tech incubator, meet some smart and inspiring people and see where I can go with it.On the personal side of life, I'm getting married soon to my lady of 9 years - been engaged for over 3 years now. Live in a condo we own, hope to start a family in the next year and take that adventure in life. We're comfortable these days and I try to not take any of it for granted.
Helping a friend get a business going these days too, doing web stuff, marketing, etc. and it's a good creative outlet.Personally for myself, just trying to work out and exercise as much as I can and be in the best shape of my life. Doing that RIGHT THIS SECOND at the gym, so back to the iron...

I like long walks on the beach and staying disciplined in certain crafts to keep my mind sharp.I take on projects and do my best to apply my developed craft and knowledge to make these projects great accomplishments.
I do not have much patience for nonsense and pseudo-elitist snobbery.

Working full-time and freelance to help pay bills and and a mortgage that I'm a bit upside-down on.
That said, I made the decision to move from Dallas, TX to live by the beach and surf. I would probably be better off financially back in the city, but I'm WAY happier and healthier living on the coast.
Working freelance is helping me get ahead a little, but will definitely need a better salary if I plan on being able to support a family down the road. That.. or not spend so much money on iPads and camera lenses!

Walked straight into a nice full-time web gig at a university after graduating. After a few years here now I'm getting a little bored doing the same in-house stuff day in and day out. Though, I'm appreciative for the job after seeing my old classmates struggle to get jobs in the industry.
Married last year. No plans for kids until we hit 30 at least.
Looking at going back to school and getting my masters degree.
- I've seen a lot of my classmates struggle to gain a foothold as well, and I myself have been laid off more than once.ridg0026

@ Jacque -- what's the appeal for you to getting a masters? It's something i've thought about, but I'm not sure as to the benefits it would provide in this field and if they outweigh the time investment/debt. Looking to give yourself more options or just learn more??

There's a few programs I've looked at applying to. Not all are MFA programs, there's some science and tech in there as well.
I have no delusions that getting an MFA is going to net me a bigger paycheck, or mean diddly-squat to potential clients, but I've been giving a lot of thought in the past few years to teaching at the university level, and that pretty much requires a graduate degree.
That isn't to say that I want to drop out of the industry and go all academic. I like the idea of mainly teaching during the school year while running a studio that takes on a bit of work at the same time, and then kicking into high gear on client work during the summer months.

29 – Just moved to VA from a lifetime in NY, adjusted pretty quickly. Making just enough that I don't need to keep a sharp eye on the bank account. Soon to be married to my girlfriend of 5 years. Great relationship with my family and friends.
Life is good – I've been very fortunate to have so many positive experiences in my 20s. I hope the streak continues into my 30s.

Finishing up my first year out of college as a designer at a small design firm. Only two of my classmates have sort-of design jobs, but I'm the only one with a full-time design job.Realize I'm incredibly naive and unexperienced. And broke. And single. Life could be better. I'm workin' on all of that. Just thankful to be here, I guess. Yep.
