i don't understand the mentality of "it's a good cause, just give them a dollar", without questioning who they're giving a dollar to and how it's gonna be used. and that seems to be most peoples response when shown the other side of the story...

I think everyone in this thread has agreed to the cause. But this is (or was... or should be) a design forum and in part to everyones comment that you thought to be "negative", there were parts to the piece that came across forced and dumbed down and manipulative. Granted thats probably on a checklist requirement for marketing and advertising, but it rubbed people the wrong way. Myself included.
- just make sure to never rub yourself the wrong way ; )whhipped

"The organization behind Kony 2012 — Invisible Children Inc. — is an extremely shady nonprofit that has been called ”misleading,” “naive,” and “dangerous” by a Yale political science professor, and has been accused by Foreign Affairs of “manipulat[ing] facts for strategic purposes.” They have also been criticized by the Better Business Bureau for refusing to provide information necessary to determine if IC meets the Bureau’s standards.
Additionally, IC has a low two-star rating in accountability from Charity Navigator because they won’t let their financials be independently audited. That’s not a good thing. In fact, it’s a very bad thing, and should make you immediately pause and reflect on where the money you’re sending them is going.
By IC’s own admission, only 31% of all the funds they receive go toward actually helping anyone [pdf]. ......"

ask yourself
• why Uganda and not Congo?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazi…
• Why kony and not bush, blair, etc the list is long, and why should you care for a cause you knew nothing about (I assume) and is in reality alot more tamer that other orrendous act happening right now in the world,
e.s.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim…or nearer to your parts, these crimes go as near as 1980's, why no outrage?

As I've said before,
if we need to be honest toward those crimes,
we have to bring ALL the war criminals to court, everyone,
not only dictators from banana republics, everyone, then maybe after that we can pretend to be activist,
till then, the cynic me is Meh- gotta start somewhere, no?locustsloth

This would be a totally worthy cause if the country you pay taxes to wasn't already involved in a war and about to get involved in another.

This guy started this blog in criticism of the video and Invisible Children offered to fly him to Africa but he refused because he didn't like the idea of charity money going towards flying a blogger to Africa. He has a post on where all the money is going.

Wife: 'Kony 2012' director suffers from psychosis
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The wife of the film director who made a wildly popular video about brutal African warlord Joseph Kony says her husband has been diagnosed with brief reactive psychosis and is expected to stay in the hospital for weeks.
Jason Russell was hospitalized last week in San Diego after witnesses saw him running through streets in his underwear, screaming and banging his fists on the pavement.
Danica Russell said Wednesday that her husband's condition was brought on by extreme exhaustion, stress and dehydration. She says it may be months before he returns to his job at Invisible Children, the San Diego-based charity he co-founded in 2005.
The 30-minute video has been viewed more than 84 million times on YouTube since it was released this month.

I understand the process, but for fuck sake the way this company has gone about advertising this is just wrong, I swear it more to do with that annoying American kid, then it does helping a charity, and any website with Bushes face on it is not a good thing.

@Georges
I do understand, but this makes people act for a good cause. If one thing, it will bring to light on the fact that relying on "old media" is not as effective as social media when trying to speak to the masses.
Might even give more people the idea that they can also create events that talk about the issues on lets say, Congo for example.
I don't get why the success of causes like this is detrimental to other causes.

This KONY thing is utter bullshit. Ego strokes for the hipster generation. It boils down asking a bunch of clueless hipster kids to get involved in a campaign to pressure US politicians to support a policy of utilizing more military resources in the developing world and a chance to use lasers and NAVY Seals against "bad" dark people. It's not like these asshats need encouragement to do that, but there it is.
Africa is fine and can handle it's own problems. If you want to help Africa, invest some money in some African businesses, or go visit it or something. Sending money to some hipster douche with a copy of iMovie for a cause years past it's sell date is fucking stupid.
"To hate injustice and stand on righteousness is a difficult thing. Furthermore, to think that being righteous is the best one can do and to do one’s utmost to be righteous will, on the contrary, brig many mistakes. The Way is in a higher place then righteousness. This is very difficult to discover, but it is the highest wisdom. When seen from this standpoint, things like righteousness are rather shallow. If one does not understand this on his own, it cannot be known."

A Ugandan perspective explains why the Kony 2012 short film is complete Mainstream media propaganda.

Is Kony like Sony or more like Tony?
Seems like balogna.
