We've got a lot of work lately, and we've got to hire someone to help with production around here. Probably someone straight out of school, that's pleasant and trainable. Somebody to sit in the corner and follow instructions.
How much should we pay someone like that?

$30/hr
- Sounds like way too much.boobs
- not for someone that knows what they're doing and doesn't need to be babysat.doesnotexist
- PA + straight out of school = $30 an hour is ridiculously high.ArtOrDie

hmm.... Ann Arbor.... not sure the market expectations there....
NOTE: The beancounter boss's question is what you pay the person, but the REAL issue is how good they are! How productive? How much handholding?
How the get your culture? Do they piss off clients? Who cares about wages if they are slow, require handholding and piss off clients!
- I think the question was how much to pay. Seems pretty clear what he is looking for. L2.dMullins
- why is a production/intern person meeting clients?Gnash
- YES... but the beancounters in previous gigs paid smart people shit and bullshitters TONS.... sorry for the PTSDvaxorcist
- This person will not be meeting with clients, sending emails, or talking on the phone. Client won't even know person exists.boobs

$10/hr minimum. Minimum wage is unacceptable and unrealistic wage to live on.
I live in MI. I was able to squeeze at least that out of both of my internships (double for the last). Supplying fringe benefits like lunch/drinks helps.
You've got UofM right there for you to feed off of. Contact a head of the design department and see if they have anyone who they might recommend.
There's also Wayne State and College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Although I would be loathe to commute from/around Detroit to Ann Arbor for anything less than $10/hr.

Yeah, it looks like we're going to hire someone from Washtenaw Community College. They start tomorrow.

Internships can be at minimum wage if the work is good and enjoyable.
If you want a production-monkey, pay better so you feel less guilty about the shitty, sit-in-a-corner, work you're giving them.
If they're doing actual work towards something you'll make money from, they should be earning a decent wage.

nobody should be using interns as production monkeys. You want to hire someone to do extra work for cheap HIRE someone who is capable and willing. Hire a student if necessary just don't tell them its an internship. You want someone to learn, you want to help talent grow who can then subsequently help your company or industry, get an intern.
I would severely resent a company who used me as a 'production monkey' while I was trying to do an internship. Pay the intern too if you feel like it but don't use them like a hired hand... maybe on occasion.
- not that many here are suggesting that but i do see the attitude frequentlyGminor

I got paid ~$13 per hour for my first job out of college. It was basically a production job. I had pretty decent benefits too.

I was paid under minimum wage for my first internship.

I was paid with 'thank you' on my first internship.

ya'all are cheap.
even when i was in school i would never work for $13/hr unless it was a campus job.
show them respect and either pay them well or give them food & beers.
- haha, respect what? their untrained eye?dMullins
- that they're helping youdoesnotexist
- It's not about respect. It's about the value of a person's contribution to the organization. Simple numbers.ArtOrDie

Hm, I'm fresh out of school. I get paid less than $13/hour...as a full time designer at a small design firm. I'm not pleased with this, but it's okay for now. I guess some of what you pay them should factor in cost of living.

In the midwest (outside of Chicago), people right out of school making an hourly wage for design are getting somewhere between $12 and $30 per hour.
If you're only paying someone $20/hr right out of school, if they work full time that's over $40k per year. In this economy, and outside of major coastal towns, most junior designers who are paid a salary are making somewhere in the $35–40K range. So paying a junior around $20/hr is totally reasonable.

"Minimum wage, IMO."
Nice. So you view the work of a designer with a four year degree as being equivalent to that of a dish washer or a parking lot attendant. Good to know.

Seems like you're going to just ignore the kid. better pay them top dollar. $100/hr

where do you guys find people?

I called the local community college, and talked to the head of the design program. She had a few people send me their resumes and samples.
