Not a bad question.
I would say that this symbol's meaning will remain unequivocally clear for some time. Much like this:

- most kids today have never actually seen a telephone like this.randommail

I have no problem with that; and I think that from the visual point of view legacy should be maintained. Good old days....

Though technological advances in the DEVICES we use to exchange with each other unfold rather quickly, we rely on a stable language (and the dogged sluggishness of the meanings of words/symbols) to communicate effectively.

some symbols transitioned quite smoothly. the trash icon for instance. while you can probably still buy the old metal version, a waste basket with a recycle symbol was a good step forward, imo:

I find that only shitty ass apps (Microsoft) still use the floppy disc. Most use a folder with an arrow, or an HD, as the Save icon.
