    Whenever Brent oil drops down to $60 something happen at strait of Hormuz.
    It goes over $66 and Trump escalates a trade war dropping down the price again.
    It's just a fun game they play.

    Nothing like starting a little election-year war — especially when impeachment's got you under the weather — to try and bolster your chances, amirite?

    • Did you see the footage of the kill? Impeccable American perfection. 2 car fires on the side of the road among manicured shrubs, grass, & sidewalk.robotron3k
    • Now we all know, that they just found out how great our military really is.robotron3k
  • mg3326

    The people who know nothing about this but celebrate it anyways, and don't understand the ramifications for Iran, need to turn the situation upside down and ask themselves something pretty simple:

    What if... Secretary of State Mike Pompeo or another top US military or government official were arriving at an airport in the UK - an ally - and he was killed by a drone stroke launched by Iran - a hostile adversary.

    How do you think we'd react to that as Americans? As a government? As a military?

    Soleimani might have been hugely important for years in terms of Iran's reach and influence on terrorism in the Middle East. But he wasn't a Bin Laden type hiding in the mountains, he was a government official for two decades. His level in government was equivalent to our security of defense or secretary of state positions.

    And to those who say "but he was a bad guy and responsible for a lot of American lives lost," I have to ask the question: Are our secretaries of defense or state so innocent? The United States has waged war around the world for decades, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths, many innocent people, attempts at regime change and waging heavy influence on other countries.

    People are being incredibly short-sighted if that don't understand that equivalence, and what this situation will likely kick off.

    • Iran Gov = silly, the people are great and they don't want to fight. The most they can do is mess with the Straights.robotron3k

    @mg33:

    I appreciate that you — as an individual — find this situation appalling, because it really is.

    It's not, however, the least bit surprising that this happened.

    The view from outside your country is this: if there's one thing — and one thing only — you Americans love more than your previous guns, it's a good old-fashioned war. You worship it. You celebrate it. It's almost a religion. Not only that, you're collectively so convinced of your inherent superiority relative to the rest of us, that war-starting is a must to maintain the illusion.

    Look at the final two candidates in your previous presidential election: a Clinton, whose hubs fancied himself a nice little dust-up when his back was against the wall (though, to be fair, it happened in his second term when he wasn't up for re-election, but still), and who herself couldn't be trusted to not start one of her own; and candidate #2 was a rank moron, the village idiot, who couldn't foreign policy his way out of a wet paper bag.

    The candidate your 'great' electoral system went with is the idiot. The one who is owned by the Russians. The one whose apparent purpose is to piss off your allies, and destabilise a world order that has kept things in relatively good working shape since the end of the second world war.

    Now, before QBN's own village idiots start accusing me of being a Clinton fan, I am not. She gave me the creeps, and couldn't be trusted any more than the orange knuckle-dragger can be.

    But, here's why I brought up the fact you people love war so much: the idiot is in an election year, and he's using this particular occasion to distract from his troubles. And you know what's even more galling? It's going to work. He'll be seen as a 'hero' but the ones who matter the most: the electorate, and he's going to get re-elected thanks to it.

    So, now think about the implications of this latest incident:

    • The world will become even more destabilised — economically, socially, and politically, quite possibly leading to even more alienation of allies and 'friends';
    • The chances of an all-out war have increased dramatically, which would result in stomach-turning civilian casualty figures;
    • The likelihood of terrorist counter-attacks in US allied countries around the world — especially in Europe, but don't discount something happening on your soil, too — also resulting in even more civilian deaths.

    So, conceivably, all of this chaos and spilled blood will happen all because one old white guy is trying to save his political skin, and the culture of warmongering and violence in your country will permit it to happen.

    Is any this really good, right, and proper in your view?

    I've no idea what's going on but I don't really see how this will help Trump get re-elected.

    A few war-hungry Republicans will like it but weren't lots of his supporters happy that he'd promised to step back from the Middle East?

    It won't win over any anti-Trumpers. They'll now be pinning everything little thing that happens in the ME on him, as a direct consequence of this. He's armed his critics and potentially upset some maga people.

    Soleimani has fueled a lot of nasty conflicts and killed a lot of people, directly or indirectly, many of them American soldiers — though it's worth noting also that much of his recent effort has been dedicated to fighting ISIS (with great effectiveness, by all accounts) in a tacit uneasy alliance with U.S. forces.

    Yet even the worst of Soleimani's record pales in comparison with the most blood-drenched American warmongers. If Soleimani deserves condemnation for arming Iraqi insurgents, then George W. Bush and Dick Cheney deserve 10 times as much for starting the war in the first place. It was a pointless, illegal war of aggression sold on lies that obliterated Iraqi society and killed perhaps half a million people, almost all of them innocent civilians. (Our own Soleimani, General David Petraeus, was connected to the operation of Iraqi torture dungeons and paramilitary death squads during the fight against the insurgency.)

    If Soleimani deserves blame for helping Bashar al-Assad brutally defeat Syrian rebels, Henry Kissinger deserves 10 times as much for orchestrating the bombing slaughter of perhaps a quarter million Cambodians and paving the way for the Khmer Rouge genocide that killed 1.7 million people.

    If any accused war criminal at an airport is fair game, then there are a lot of people in D.C. and Northern Virginia who better start traveling by train or ship.

    Indeed, the Quds Force itself was originally created during the Iran-Iraq War, which was started by a heavily U.S.-backed Saddam Hussein in 1980. A million Iranians died in the grueling eight-year conflict. And the reason the Islamic Republic exists in the first place is because the United States and Britain toppled Iran's fledgling democracy in 1953 and installed a brutal dictator.

    It is not exactly hard to understand why Iran — like about every other country in the Middle East — keeps some brutal, hard people like Soleimani around. It's a violent, unstable neighborhood, and war is an unavoidable reality. And no country is more responsible for that fact than the United States.

    Chauvinist American commentators always presume America has the best intentions, and that the American military is composed of saintly warrior-poets. The reality is that the lumbering American colossus has unleashed a Thirty Years' War-level of violent chaos all around Iran for no good reason at all. We are ruled by a president who recently reversed the demotion of a guy turned in by his own fellow soldiers for war crimes — namely, gleefully murdering helpless prisoners, old men, and little girls for sport.
