Hoo I like this thread.
I have one of those at the desk next to me, he's a total douche nozzle.
Commenting on my layouts like he knows shit, always talking louder than anyone, I am building the perfect question for him so he can look like the wanker he is at the next status meeting.

bitter much? haters gonna hate but it is what it is. They used to have the interns do this stuff so just look at it as giving seasoned interns fancy titles for making the company look good on all the social media sites you all are looking at everyday too. big deal.

Once got a presentation from one of these snake oil merchants.
Funniest shit I've ever read. What Ashton Kutchers twitter feed has to do with selling carpets I'll never know but it took up 3 slides of the presentation.
- yeah, that's usually how it's done, they bring in these "social media elitists" examples and tell you its mustpopfodders

Nobody gets hired for being an 'expert' but there is definitely a need for more and more specialists or experienced social media managers, strategists etc. Remember when everyone thought web designers were geniuses and millionaires?

you pretty much said it with your initial statement. Companies don't know any better, they hear a buzz word and they jump on the band wagon. It's formally, fucking ridiculous.

Someone I know is going back to school to study social media. Dammit I can't remember who it is... but I saw their Facebook post or something like that and just thought "why?"

It's kind of like playing Bass. Super easy to learn the basics, hard to do really well.

I've organised a meet with one tomorrow. Looking forward to this.

My favorite part is when million dollar companies plunk down an intern to represent their brand through social media. The business dudes have no clue that there should be a strategy in place.
Social media sites are sometimes a customer's first touchpoint with a company, don't they know there should a little more thinking behind this?

nobody like a brand whining and screaming at you asking you to be its friend.

"we need to add some social media icons to this page..."
"everything needs a like button"- 'Let's do social media!', and its retarded inbred cousin: 'Let's go viral with this!'Continuity

I used to work with one up until recently. The extent of her job was making FB posts and uploading images. I shudder to think her salary was approaching mine.

no but seriously, the social media is an important sector for the corporate entities. it builds brand awareness.
