nobody like a brand whining and screaming at you asking you to be its friend.

they do a job that didn´t exist two years ago. and they will something else in two years.

I feel you, I feel you all...But trust me it's worst when they are Social media expert "slash" project manager....One of these days I will staple your fucking lips....

I think it's been said, but having done a lot of work as a PM, I see these twats fiddle their way into large projects and command top dollar. They make me want to cringe. Everyone's a designer, in their own heads, but social media has absolutely nothing to do with UX work.
- design takes actual talent..usually, wheras snake oil sales just takes gutsvaxorcist

My favorite part is when million dollar companies plunk down an intern to represent their brand through social media. The business dudes have no clue that there should be a strategy in place.
Social media sites are sometimes a customer's first touchpoint with a company, don't they know there should a little more thinking behind this?

i treat it as sales and marketing and have a solid offering that works... you want KPI's... set em, i'll work to them no worries.
the problem is people think social media is all about writing blog posts... its not!

there's a big social network conference going on in town today... it's an odd thing to behold. lots of circular reasoning for the sake of self-preservation.

It's just a new medium. Success is born from good content. If you've got nothing interesting to say, nobody listens. whether that's in print, a blog, facebook or twitter.

They should all just admit they work in marketing/PR and that they aren't really experts in anything.
- Well, they do they work in marketing/PR. And why can't they be experts?haga
- If they were experts in social media they would be picking and choosing there salaries with the top companies in the worlduuuuuu
- ...world. Also they would be in high level think tanks and doing private consultation with Charlie Sheen's people.uuuuuu
- Not sure people realize the meaning of the word "expert".uuuuuu
- i don't think that just because you're a 'expert' that means you can pick your own $...bjladams
- Having professional experience and knowledge of a sub-field of marketing does not constitute expertise or specialty.uuuuuu
- Its just a phrase. They would be in demand to say the least, not like merely employed.uuuuuu
- seems a lot of these guys are well paid, and bring a lot of attention to their companies...bjladams
- but they aren't experts duh... they are just valuable employees. I'd allow them to claim a specialty but expert is simply wrong and misleading.uuuuuu
- ... misleading. Experts in science or industry for example have to earn the word 'expert' and are paid for it.uuuuuu
- You get 'expert' added to your resume when you've accomplished something significant for the ENTIRE field.uuuuuu
- ... field you're in.uuuuuu
- well, seems your the expert then.bjladams
- see no.... I'm just correct. Its like people really don't know what 'expert' actually means.uuuuuu

I just talked to someone about this the other day and remembered the friend I mentioned. I cannot imagine throwing away $$ on a degree in social media when everyone is just making this stuff up as they go. Talk about a waste.

- don't laugh, he was dominating it and he knew it. he was fucking with everyone and they drank the kool-aidpopfodders

The job is totally bunk, but most of the social media team where I work are kinda cool and geeky
