i wonder what would happen if this was going on in america. i'd imagine the cops would shoot plenty of people. as awful as the riots are, and as hypothetical as them happening in america would be, i can't say i'd have that much confidence in authority here to deal with them effectively / humanely.

Al Ghazali who was a philospoher/theologian from 11 century said there are three sanctions that helps to have righteous individuals and a righteous society.
1 Moral Sanctions : Can be given by parents and the culture/society
2 Legal Sanctions : Working Law & Punishment system teaches and maintains control
3 Afterlife sanctions : If the first two options are not working well, this one completes, by telling them that every action has a reaction even if it's not experienced in a lifetime.First two is the common and somewhat working sanctions for classes that have prosperous lives, somewhat educated. But still, rich or middle classes commit crimes as much as the lower income ones.
What is missing in a "civilized" society like the UK and others is the third one. Unless we have that, no matter who we are, we are not different than those on the street.- So basically a delusional sanction?ukit

I haven't been following this closely but according to this article won't the police/government have to pay for damages according to the Riot Damages Act? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finan…
While the dumb kids are essentially destroying their own neighborhoods isn't it ironic that the police will end up paying for most of this? I know this opens up a conversation about taxes and budgets but aren't they also getting back at the po-po because of this?

Interesting (if brief) article on the CBC about the double-standard of social media, as it relates to the riots:

All I can say those kids are cunts, I don't care if they are wealthy, sons of a millionaire designer, or chavs.
One doesn't go on rioting because it's fun and then going for a brand new TV for free or an iPhone or some clothes. And then say it's because they don't have opportunities or some bullshit.
I was born in Caracas and I was there in 1989 when the "Caracazo" happened, basically the favelas took on the streets and broke into supermarkets because food wasn't anywhere to be found (supermarket owners knew a devaluation of the currency was impending and they hid all the food in order to remark prices once the devaluation was in place). So all hell broke loose and people were taking huge pieces of cow back to their shanty towns to eat.
When I see these London riots all I see is spoiled first world kids that look for an stupid excuse to riot.
- <<<exactly.
you understand rioting and looting for food, but for HD tellies? gtfo!Hombre_Lobo - AgreedSteveZissou

'A 68-year-old man who was critically injured as he tried he tried to stamp out a fire during riots in west London has died, Scotland Yard has said.'

Here's a rare perspective from a guy who avoids launching into the typical hysterical polarized views.

hahha fuckn ghadaffi and he's right too,
if you can't see the obvious hypocrisy,
thank god the Uk doesn't have oil"The Libyan regime of Muammar Gaddafi has called on British Prime Minister David Cameron to step down, saying he has “lost all legitimacy.”
Libya's Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Kaaim said, "Cameron and his government must leave after the popular uprising against them and the violent repression of peaceful demonstrations by police.”
“Cameron and his government have lost all legitimacy. These demonstrations show that the British people reject this government which is trying to impose itself through force,” he added.
Kaaim asked the UN Security Council and the international community not to stay with their “arms crossed” in the face of the flagrant violation of the rights of the British people..."

the guardian says it well too,
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commen…
"A social media crackdown is the wrong response to riotsIf the UK government restricts social networking in answer to the riots, what separates it from the Arab tyrannies and China?..."
"... Cameron also said, according to a Guardian tweet, that he would look at asking online services to take down offending photos. Again, who decides that content is offending? If you give authority to government and telco and social companies to censor that, what else can and will they censor?
Beware, sir. If you take these steps, what separates you from the Saudi government demanding the ability to listen to and restrict its BBM networks? What separates you from Arab tyrannies cutting off social communication via Twitter or from China banning it?..."
