I do very much like it too. Much cleaner and easier to read. And like you said, they're doing a good job at streamlining their services.

they re styled Calender aswell in the same way

Interestingly enough, the new look is not available on Google Apps Premium yet.. I guess it takes a bit longer to go to the premium service.

Amazing what some whitespace does...

I've my gmail skinned so i can see the modif,
btw: anyone knows who's redesigning the entire google?
- Boz0
Andy Hertzfeld is in charge of the whole new redesign

Here's Andy's post about Google's redesign and Google+ stuff.. I would assume the same team is working on the rest of the stuff

Really loving the new Google style, thank fuck they've finally grown up design wise. If they could get some similar UI talent working on Android then that would be sweet because it's UI hell on that platform.

I like the new style, but the sizing is kind of inconsistant as of now...

That line spacing is ridiculous. White space ok, but this is just too much. The loss of information is greater than the benefit (readability?).
Also I don't really think the combo of red with dark grey is a good choice. Especially not when red is used for highlighting. Red is perceived as a warning color. E.g. take a close look at the "SEARCH MAIL" and "COMPOSE MAIL" buttons. I don't see why one has to be red and the other one blue.
And there's more. But in short, while there are strengths (e.g. the buttons on top) I don't like the color use and use of white space in this redesign.
- you can change the theme to Preview Dense to get rid of all that spacingitstimefortea
- I should try that as soon as the design becomes availale for Google apps, thanks.rizm
- almost every comment you made was an opinion.chalk
- I agree about the spacing, even the dense version is too much... that's just my opinion lol

To clarify "there is more": the logo is not in line with the design. It's fiddly, messy and the text "by google" is too small and (arguably) pointless. The advanced "Show search options" and "Create a filter" are too close and too small, so they're difficult to click (Fitt's law in interaction). Now that's a spot where white space could have been useful ;-)

It's hard to complain about a design that improves the gmail experience...it's been so ugly for so long. So, kudos to google for finally getting that engineers are not designers.
My one criticism is that the white space is too uniform; it diminishes hierarchy and makes the eye float. They should tighten up the email column just a little to help separate from the folders/nav in left column.

Why is Buzz still there?
Just take it out back and shoot it google FFS put the embarrassment out of it's misery

I like it too Subtle button highlighting, some extra room throughout...it's more legible, but like others have said, maybe too much? Having it spread across the Google+ experience is a lot more impressive than the secondary Gmail skin that you're seeing above though.
