a girl at work has one of these and loves it.
http://www.google.com/products/c…i'd rather sit on the ball only but she loves it.

Does cycling help in this case?
- You're still sitting... ; )... & road cycling is even more aggressive sitting... not to mention TT...ideaist
- "aggressive siting" :Di_monk
- sitting, eri_monk
- lol @ aggressive sitting... I think QBN promotes this type of sitting...ideaist
- Cycling actually strengthens your lower back. And makes you sterile.MrT

as girly as it sounds, start yoga... go to some group classes. Working out helped me, but without stretching and yoga, you can easily get more tight. It's a good work out, and in a class, you have to concentrate, so you don't have to think about work. My back used to hurt a lot (and my neck even more). As long as I do working out, and even yoga once a week, it helps a lot.

Boz knows about this (I'm not joking) I think he changed all his desks to work standing up.

Get a standing desk. I had one at Amazon and it was great. You'll need a stool because you can't stand all the time. It's better for you and keeps you more energized. You also might need one of those rubber mats (like cooks have) to ease your joints.
I'm sorry to hear about your brother too. :(

calisthenics, body weight exercises, are your best bet. things like body squats, pull ups, pushups, bridges, etc.
yoga is good. deadlifts might help, but if you ain't lifting 100% good form, you stand the chance of making your back worse by causing injury or overtraining.
bodyweight exercises have my vote. sorry about your bro, hope his situation improves.

I have been having back pains as well due to the long periods of sitting in front of a computer.
I just recently picked up an exercise ball to sit on while working. Its been helping some what - I guess I just need to get used to it.
Another suggestion that seems to be popular is getting a stand up desk. I would love to try this out http://www.geekdesk.com/

Kinda forgot about this post. Thanks for the kind words.
Necessity is the mother of invention and my brother is taking things head on so far. He's taken all his years of fabrication knowledge and begun work on a brace that will allow him to surf. Can't wear it all the time because you begin to strain the joints in the hips and shoulders but it's getting him out of the house.
As far as preventative steps go... I've discovered a thing called a spinal decompression circuit. This stuff is no friggin joke the best way to keep the back healthy.
They combine weight exercises with stretching (yoga) and muscle alignments to really promote a healthy spine throughout. The one I'm going to also has a detox circuit with a combination of massage and heat therapy. It's all covered by my insurance too...
I've also been swimming which is massive.
Overall this has been a curse and a blessing... I'm working better right now than I ever have, it is on account of my brother going through some heavy stuff tho.

You could stand while you work at the keyboard instead of sitting.
Hemingway used to do this. Of course, he stood at a bar in Havana.
