calisthenics, body weight exercises, are your best bet. things like body squats, pull ups, pushups, bridges, etc.
yoga is good. deadlifts might help, but if you ain't lifting 100% good form, you stand the chance of making your back worse by causing injury or overtraining.
bodyweight exercises have my vote. sorry about your bro, hope his situation improves.
