Spine and posture issues?

I'm watching my younger brother go through a degenerative spine disorder that started with a bulging disc. His doctors have diagnosed the cause as prolonged compression of his spine from sitting. It's terrible to lose my partner in crime (no more surfing, no more moto rides, he's completely immoble) and I'm having a tough time with it.
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience.
Also, I'm sitting on average 9 hours a day (I've been doing this for about 9 years now), I know I don't have great posture although I do take walks about every hour just to keep moving. My back is often sore but I'm ok otherwise. Outside of good diet and exercise, anyone have any tips so I don't end up like my little brother? Any advise on how to support someone going through what he is?

Interesting post, 'cos I'm always worried about this. Any advice would be really useful. I'm the same and sit for over 9 hours a day, and sometime only get up for a piss! HELP!

Get a better office chair.

I used to have a fairly bad back, just the way I sit I think caused it.
Started doing deadlifts at the gym one a week and its actually really helped. Although I did pull my lower back the other week so its not in the best state at the moment.

If you go to the gym, do back extensions. They strengthen your lower back muscles an awful lot, and your posture benefits as a result, by helping pull your shoulders back.

All you can is promote constant activity and diet; when you're NOT sitting make sure you're running, walking, jogging, biking, swimming, etc. & not just sitting somewhere else...
I'm going through massive neck and shoulder pains from sitting... & even when cycling I'm still just sitting in a different position...
Variety IS in fact the spice of life...
In terms of your younger brother, as unfortunate as this is, you must simply be at his side and take care of yourself; perhaps what DRIFTMONKEY mentioned about a better, ergonomic office chair, my fiance & I both have Herman Miller's and they seem to at least help with pain/stress...

found physical therapy that believes in yoga and other practices. they are helpful and take lifestyle and habits into consideration for help that is unique for each person.

reach for the sky, do squats, lay on the ground, all fours and stick your butt up and rotate your hips like you want some in the butt. Do all these things for several minutes with 30 second holds.

Thanks for all the comments.
I'm lucky I work for a sports brand that lets me do whatever I need to do to stay on track health-wise. The pullup bar would be great, I've been doing the lat pulldown machine at the gym and swimming a ton for the past year or so. Seems to make quite a difference.
I've also been toying with preventative ideas like spinal decomression therapy. It's similar to the inversion board but a little more scientific in that they can actually isolate specific sections of the spine.
Ugh this stuff is so freaky. Avoid back injury like the plague. So many years of snowboarding, motorcyles, hockey, drunkness and all around tomfoolery (not to mention sitting at a desk all day) is coming back wholesale on my brother. Having done all the same stuff at an increased level of intensity, I'm hoping I can keep it all together...
Thanks for the advice and I'll post my results about the decompression after I go tonight.
Thanks again.

i used to have chronic back pain until i started practicing wing chun, a martial art developed in china. it's pretty much dirty boxing, but must be keeping my back loose and relaxed.
as for your bro. try to figure out some new stuff that'd be fun for both of you. go cart racing, roller coaster, fishing, whatever it is...try to evolve your relationship
