You guys are missing the point...it's not about what does or doesn't crash the browser or which technology motion tweens more smoothly.

The reason all these big technology companies are getting on board with standards-based approach is because it gives them something they lacked with Flash, control. They want to be able to develop these technologies at their own pace and not be beholden to Adobe's release schedule.

If you want proof of how this works just look at the fact that only NOW is Adobe coming out with robust mobile version of their plugin. They dragged their feet for years but once HTML5 became a reality and Jobs started talking about Flash being dead did they actually get around to it. Only now that WebGL is emerging are we seeing a true 3D version of Flash, despite the fact that Papervision was introduced years ago.

Adobe having a monopoly on this stuff is in no one's interests but their own...and that's really what is driving all this. All the talk about browser compatibility issues (which will be resolved soon enough) is pretty superficial in comparison.

    • yes they want an open environmentjadrian_uk
    • ONLY now the mobile is even getting proper HTML support wtf are you talking about. Nobody cared about mobile before.. and HTML5/JS doesn't even work great now nor does it have true multi-touch support..Boz

    • The point is using the best tool possible and you get MORE control out of Flash in most cases.CyBrainX

    this is what i got:

the only thing it converted was the BG color to my site. oh well..

    • I don't think this supports Flash 8. I think only Flash 5,CyBrainX

Imagine Flash enabled on the iPod and the Iphone.
All potential applications free of charge, on which Apple would have no control and which they would have no profits.

    • Ipad *dasmeteor
    • apple makes no profits on free app store applicationsanimatedgif
    • No, but they sure do on the ads :)fyoucher1
    • got it on adroid - flash works a treat - its all a load of bollocksfadein11
    • This is exactly why Jobs bitches about Flash. He's a fucking greedy liar.CyBrainX
  • ernexbcn0

@dasmeteor Flash doesn't reach the level of performance a native Objective-C app has on iOS.

In a future when the devices aren't so CPU impaired, it might work. I think Adobe is betting on that, while they keep pushing their mobile flash player date, it's being "soon" according to Adobe for the past 3 years or something.

    • yes.. and developers are sick of learning vendor-specific languages.... ugh! not enough brain RAM for the API of the month club!vaxorcist
  • animatedgif0

^ but even then, if we have more power then why throw that power away just to make some developers lives a little easier.

When phones reach the power than a normal flash game would be viable will be a time when native code would make them look like a joke.

    • so you don't use ftp or chat clients? just telnet and irc channels eh?registe
    • sorry your analogy makes no sense so I'm having trouble understanding your pointanimatedgif

And let's not forget this: Flash always need to work with that stupid application(the Flash program), wich among tooo many things to number has the most unprofessional code editor i have seen.

    • use Flex... or write in notepad... ... if you understand AS3 - you could care less about how well the code editor displays hints etcPonyBoy
    • heh, totally. i know very few flash devs that use the flash ide these days.kingsteven

All of your Boz are belong to us now

Gotta give Boz some credit, he is like a one man crusade for Flash

    • considering the "uber reich" of qbn goes against him without provocation, yeah good on himregiste
    • That twitter feed reads like a botanimatedgif

^ it's his job as an "Adobe Evangelist" isn't it? or am I thinking of someone else?

Boz, with all the "supposed" mobile market share Flash has... There are hundreds of thousands apps out there, just from the iPhone alone. There are like two measley apps out there made with Flash. None of them are apps like Angry Birds. Ifnthey tried to make an Angry Birds version for Flash, it would literally hiccup and choke on the lack of power Flash has. Adobe not only profits from selling Flash, but then you have to buy more apps, just to make a simulated mobile app from it.

    • flash isn't all about animationregiste
    • lol @ "angry bird app" it's marketed as one, it's actually only a game.registe
    • Animation is Flash's only strength. Rip out that timeline, then you'd have no use for Flash.omg
    • i was an early adopters of flash/php based cms interfaces and love the code base for doing soregiste
    • i enjoy the concept of spite based design, animation is a toy within its capabilities imoregiste
    • that said, i haven't published anything flash since 2005-2006 mayberegiste
    • CMS IN FLASH? HAHAHAHA OH SHIT NIGGA WHAT ARE YOU DOING?animatedgif
  • Boz0

^ omg.. your comments show me that you have zero credibility in discussing this topic. You obviously have not used Flash and if you did you problably used it for animation.

Don't make asinine opinions based on the lack of experience of knowledge you have.

This is why i fucking HATE this hype and shit about HTML5.. Most people being the loudest are simply completely uneducated, uninformed and probably don't know anything else but HTML/JS/CSS (JS being probably being the weakest link) and these people are regurgitating some shit that is spewed by that idiot Jobs.

In addition, if your argument is that Angry Birds is the pinnacle on apps and why Flash sucks, then I'll just tell you that Farmville and Zynga's games are FAR MORE advanced in every single aspect to simple Angry Birds.

Fuck, my project where I created a website for Gabe and Universal (I'm Rogue) for Catfish movie, where I built from scratch a replica of OSX with full XML based filesystem, connected to databases and created QBN like forum (in protected area), built multiple apps like an email client, full OSX dock, video players, photo viewer app and stickies and bunch of other stuff, is arguably more advanced than Angry Birds.

    http://www.iamrogue.com/catfish

Flash is only good for animations.. LOL. seriously man

    • Ha, I love that. I did something similar (although not nearly as accomplished) back in 06 for a huge famous band agency..mikotondria3
    • ..for the client/ b2b back-end of their operation. I probably couldn't do it again now. Hope they don't want any amends :).mikotondria3
    • Good work though, sir, is the thrust of what I say. I think you've got too much equipment in your office, but props on the work ;)mikotondria3
  • omg0

Boz, what exactly can Flash do besides animations? Simulate OSX? Create a virtual QBN? I won't even get into why I'd even want an email client made of Flash.

You're site doesn't even play on my computer. I'd be much better if you didn't make it with Flash so I could see your animations. How much credibility does any Flash user need to know that it just doesn't cut it against HTML?

And you honestly think that the physics in Farmville can go head to head against Angry Birds? Flash can't compete against it. It's time to move on. Cross browsing issues was the only reason people adopted the plug-in technology. When Adobe killed off Macromedia, the company failed to keep up with the same pace of innovation. A company ahead of it's time, now two years behind.

    • please stop it.. the more you talk the sillier you sound.Boz
    • omg you have no clueeficks
    • Obviously you brainiacs know it all. I guess I shouldn't expect a competent response back to such simple questionsomg
