The only way to do b/w right is with real b/w film. digital b/w just looks fake. Film has real grain and a real texture aswell as covering the spectrum better. Nothing like light reacting with celluloid.

Both cameras are cheap point and shoot by the way. My snob alarms are going off like crazy.

Maybe not in this particular case, but I found that 98% of the time, these film vs digital battles are just like a mac vs pc ones, which basically are brought up by unsecure people that want an easy way to feel better about what they do, by trying to disqualify someone else's work.
Period.
Channel your focus on getting a great shot, these technical comparisons are for insecure beginners, your camera DOES NOT make the shot.
:)
- is that film or digital?Miguex
- and a more advanced question if you think you are a snob, what camera / lens/ film was usedMiguex
- Mamiya 645, 24mm, Neopan 400 Professional. Close?Jacque
- good start Jacque I will reveal the info once we get some more answersMiguex
- I would say film, or it's digital trying really hard to look like film, fake scratches and all.********
- what kind of bizarro world do you have us in?********
- hahaha, well is 100% digitalMiguex

The second one is better, but only because the butcher in the window is in a better position. The tech stuff doesn't matter.

i think that for the particular example that atkinson posted, the 'film vs. digital' debate doesn't really matter, as the shot is not one in which the idiosyncrasies of one or the other really make the photo. both sides can claim cases where one is better than the other, of course.
in defense of film, i am posting some photos by paolo roversi, who uses, i believe, a deardorff 8x10 large-format film camera. the characteristics of the film and large-format optics, and the tilt/swing capabilities of the traditional large-format camera, i believe, really make the photos here - these would be difficult or impossible to do with digital.

^I agree with 2
every camera brings something different to a shoot. of course the effects/look of film can be recreated but the use of a 4x5 or a waste level tlr can change the interaction between the photographer and subject in ways that can't be explained.

i'm also going to post some photos that were taken with film, by a much less worthy photographer, with a much less-impressive camera (canon eos elan iie) that i believe would lose a lot of "character" if taken with digital:
the grain of the film - ilford 3200 - plus the sheer un-reviewability of the film process, adds a sort of innocent veracity to these shots, i felt. doing them with digital would have made them too perfect.

Getting back on topic I personally find the film shoots more interesting. Snap shots often look too generic with digital cameras, and there's no point in trying to recreate something like the look of film in post if you can just do it in the camera.

there is no doubt that film is the greater medium...
and its disappointing that everyone doesn't see that

my deal is that everyone can be a photographer now... which doesnt necessarlyz mean everyone needs to be. With digital you fix it in post whch means your creating a false image in order to please what ever is popular at the moment. I shot digital before film, old canon rebel... but after a year or so i became disappointed that i couldnt get the look or feel that i wanted and so i sold it to my neighbor.
i think theres a certain amount of respect towards photography when you shoot film. your deciding to put more time and money into your photographs and it causes you to focus harder on your subject since your limited by the amount of photographs you can take...
ive sort of abandoned photoshop since i started shooting film year and half ago... i like the raw image i get, i don't see the need to fix them in post
