It's official: Gilles Duceppe has been defeated in his own riding.

I wouldn't tout the 2 party system yet. Liberals will make a come back if they can get a stronger AND more charismatic leader. They were fools to go the way the did at all.
- That may depend largely on how well the NDP perform in opposition.Continuity

The Liberals hopes lie with a few old faces and Mr. Trudeau. He's just moved up considerably, I wonder if he's got what it takes.

I hope the Liberals choose a different leader. I was a fan of most of the top Liberal leaders of the past, especially Chrétien. He may have been a caricature, but he still had a personality and was passionate about everything. Complete opposite of Harper. I can't believe Harper won via the previously Liberal voters who didn't want the NDP in power. Seems counter-productive for everything they stand for. I don't care if it's Justin Trudeau who has to use his father's name in 20 years to become Prime Minister. I just want something different. Most people don't realize that a lot of the things that are cut by Conservatives are hidden. Rarely seen by the majority. Including many progressive groups. They're always going backwards, and it will not last into the future with the new generation (more and more people believe in Liberal and NDP ideals). I'm hoping the NDP can push back a bit, but the Conservatives still have a majority.
Canada definitely needs to implement a limit on the number of terms a person can run. I've thought that since I could vote.
- personality and passion guide your views?********
- Shouldn't morals and character drive your views?********
- You're playing the communism, fascist track yet you call it liberals and conservatives.********
- Progressives side with communists. That is why they use the same logos and slogans********
- communism? dude, the 80's are over.Tungsten
- That's not what I meant. It's obvious that people look for more than just a platform when voting.Jaline

As always, the "lesser of ___ evils" always sucks.

What scares me the most about a Con majority isn't the financial part of it, it's the social one; if it was REALLY up to him, he'd take us back to the social stone age, and he might just do over the course of the next four years.

What a terrible turn of events. Harper is going to turn Canada into a Biblebelt state and nobody can stop him now. And we're closer than ever to a two party system, which is a huge step backwards for democratic representation in this country.
The only good things are the destruction of the Bloc, and the astounding gains made by the NDP – though largely in Quebec, so who knows how that will work out.

During Jack Laytons speech a few minutes ago, the crowd cheered loudly as he congratulated Elizabeth May on her historic win in Central Nova. That's some classy politicking folks.

CBC is saying voter turn out will be around 61%, which is better than 2008 but less than 2006.

it sucks, but if you voted NDP, you won. That's that.
If you voted Grits, welcome to the painful rebuilding stage, roll up your sleeves and get real.
And if you voted Bloc, au revoir motherfucker.

What the hell.

ffs... they say you get exactly the government you deserve - a minority is what I predicted and then I went to bed with this... damn. The Canadian Reagan Years indeed... damn. Best I fold up my tents and head on out I reckon... now, would some kind soul get some naked Canadian ladies up on COTD? Thank you... =)

The only good thing is that no far right or far left government would last that long in this country. So if Harper tries to change anything drastically (going backwards...like the anti-abortion route), there would be an uproar. He'd be out. I'm pretty sure of this. But obviously a lot of changes will be made that won't affect everyone right away, or does so in a subtle manner.

@Jaline:
It's all well and good to say, 'Oh, if Harper tries this or that on Canada, there'd be an uproar, he'd be out.' Okay, that _may_ be true (although 'uproar' in the Canadian sense of the word would mean meekly asking if he kindly mightn't reconsider his opinion, and giving up at the first 'no'), but he would be out in the next general election, which is four years, possibly five years - depending on if he tries to delay to the last possible moment - away.
Four years in politics is an eternity, and Harper could radically change the socio-political and socio-economic landscape with effective impunity, thanks to his majority. I rather expect he will, too.
The Canadian political system suffers from a fatal flaw, insofar as that there's really no way to get rid of a government by legal means prior to a general election, unless it's a minority situation and the government loses the confidence of the House of Commons. There is no impeachment, there is no mechanism for the collective of the electorate to tell a government to get bent before an election.
And since Canadians haven't got a revolutionary bone in their collective body, you can count direct action to overthrow the government out, too.
The only option that remains between now and the next election is attempting to oppose the government through the courts. Since there are going to be some seats in the Supreme Court up for grabs soon that Harper will likely pad with with his own ilk, I wouldn't count on that being an effective avenue, either.
Ugh.
- This is the same fear people had when Chrétien won a majority. It was worse as he had a Quebec focused agendaspot13
- Yeah. We're swapping a Quebec agenda for a western one. Stellar improvement, that.Continuity
- At least the western agenda makes money!zarkonite
- No it doesn't. It's a myth.********
- I don't disagree with this. I'm just trying to see a bright side. *weeps*Jaline
