Peru is awesome! I'm married to a peruvian and have been there a couple of times, I found if you book everything tour/trek wize when you get there its seriously cheaper. I did a 2 day quad tour of the ruins around cusco, it was fantasticly dirty - so much fun. I also did a trek of the Kolca Canyons... not jungle but stunningly beautiful. Machu Picchu is jam packed full of tourist, but breathaking. I think you'd be missing out if you skipped it. Email me if you would like any contacts, I've got a bunch of friends in Lima.
- If you do Machu Picchu, the hike up to Wayna picchu is definitely worth the extra effort.jurassica

yeah... regardless of the little bit of rain, he will miss some of the tourists. which of course is cool if you're not single...
and if you're going to Lima, hook up with Jurassica's friends... I'm sure they know where to get the best ceviche in the city... and you know you can't leave Lima w/o having some leche de tigre...
It's so good you'll never want it again until you return... and that's not some BS line... it's just that good...
Like my aunt Joanie said, "It's like an orgasm".
Ya'll hate on that... call it perverted, call it incestuas, call it what he said, she said...
but this woman can roll a doob in one hand and be on the phone talking shit in the other...

I did a 3 day Lares trek last year as part of a 18 day trip . Amazing. Bloody freezing though, you go higher than the Inca trail so you don't get the heat. We started in ollantaytambo then finished in Aguas Calientes and got the bus up to Macchu pichu in the morning. We basically didn't see any other tourists for the 3 days except for a our small group. Our guides were excellent and i'd recommend not doing it on your own.
One of the best experiences of my life. The one downside was that we didnt have time to go to Colca Canyon, which sounded brilliant. I bought the lonely planet guide and thought that was really helpful so might be worth a look as well.- Really, higher than 16,5?SeriousFreelancing
- inca trail highpoint is about 4,200m the lares we did went up to abut 4,600malnove

^ On that note, I wouldn't take the Lares trail, NO OFFENSE...
But I don't see the point in taking a bus on your final leg to Machu Picchu... other trails lead right into Machu Picchu, which seems like the way to go... ya know?

we could have walked up early in the morning, but couldnt be bothered in the end. We had to queue for tickets so the earlier we got to macchu pichu the better (we were one of the first lot in - by afternoon it was far to overcrowded). Think entry to macchu pichu is included with the permit for the inca trail. I'm not sure if it is on other treks or not. And i'm pretty sure you can only go thru the Sun Gate down to macchu pichu if you do the Inca, other wise you have to join the hoards to gain entry.

yeah Sun Gate is on the Inca... we were there before sunrise, and then walked down... like yourself, we got there before the crowds...

I was in Peru with a couple of friends a few years back, and went on a 6 day trip (from Cusco) to Manu national park. Highly highly recommended.
The guide was great, the wildlife and scenery was amazing and the whole experience was an unexpected surprise. If you’re looking to get off the tourist trail, we were (at the furthest into the Jungle) 13 hours (via boat and van) from a paved road, and about 20 hours from a phone signal. Or maybe it was the other way around — the point is that I've never in my life felt like I was further away from the bothers of civilization.
Accommodation was in pretty decent permanent camps and was mostly fine, no frills but you are in the jungle so no surprises there.
I did it with SAS travel and the guide’s name was Michel Mora who was a knowledgeable and nice guy.
I have a load of photos here (not the best shots but give an idea perhaps) http://www.flickr.com/photos/dai…
If you do decide to do this, bring a pack of cards! Nighttime entertainment was a little dull and we were kicking ourselves for not doing this.
