Peru is awesome! I'm married to a peruvian and have been there a couple of times, I found if you book everything tour/trek wize when you get there its seriously cheaper. I did a 2 day quad tour of the ruins around cusco, it was fantasticly dirty - so much fun. I also did a trek of the Kolca Canyons... not jungle but stunningly beautiful. Machu Picchu is jam packed full of tourist, but breathaking. I think you'd be missing out if you skipped it. Email me if you would like any contacts, I've got a bunch of friends in Lima.
