we could have walked up early in the morning, but couldnt be bothered in the end. We had to queue for tickets so the earlier we got to macchu pichu the better (we were one of the first lot in - by afternoon it was far to overcrowded). Think entry to macchu pichu is included with the permit for the inca trail. I'm not sure if it is on other treks or not. And i'm pretty sure you can only go thru the Sun Gate down to macchu pichu if you do the Inca, other wise you have to join the hoards to gain entry.
