I was in Peru with a couple of friends a few years back, and went on a 6 day trip (from Cusco) to Manu national park. Highly highly recommended.

The guide was great, the wildlife and scenery was amazing and the whole experience was an unexpected surprise. If you’re looking to get off the tourist trail, we were (at the furthest into the Jungle) 13 hours (via boat and van) from a paved road, and about 20 hours from a phone signal. Or maybe it was the other way around — the point is that I've never in my life felt like I was further away from the bothers of civilization.

Accommodation was in pretty decent permanent camps and was mostly fine, no frills but you are in the jungle so no surprises there.

I did it with SAS travel and the guide’s name was Michel Mora who was a knowledgeable and nice guy.

I have a load of photos here (not the best shots but give an idea perhaps) http://www.flickr.com/photos/dai…

If you do decide to do this, bring a pack of cards! Nighttime entertainment was a little dull and we were kicking ourselves for not doing this.
