I did a 3 day Lares trek last year as part of a 18 day trip . Amazing. Bloody freezing though, you go higher than the Inca trail so you don't get the heat. We started in ollantaytambo then finished in Aguas Calientes and got the bus up to Macchu pichu in the morning. We basically didn't see any other tourists for the 3 days except for a our small group. Our guides were excellent and i'd recommend not doing it on your own.
One of the best experiences of my life. The one downside was that we didnt have time to go to Colca Canyon, which sounded brilliant. I bought the lonely planet guide and thought that was really helpful so might be worth a look as well.
