How MS handles app development and distribution is important. Android is a mess. Apple's tight control at least helps to organizes the chaos of 10s and 100s of thousands of apps out there. With the Xbox Live integration and the Xbox Arcade games availability, gaming should be pretty solid on the platform in a little time.

Nokia really didn't have a choice, they had to do that because of the systematic decline in the market share. This is also good for WP7. I haven't seen many devices with that OS in Europe.

As someone else said. This is the equivalent of AOL partnering with yahoo, who cares?

Personally, I hope it is a success. MS needs to offer deals for a while to attract customers.
I am still hoping HTC One has WP7 sometime soon. Nothing else out there interests me, at all (my 4S is fine, the 5 looks old to me, nothing different, 5S won't be an inch better)
Looking forward to Surface 2, also. Loving the idea of having a tablet that is actually useful for more than presentations.

Have to say, I'm a little mystified how little attention WP7 has gotten...having played with it, the UI is pretty slick, design is great...way better experience than Android.
- at first play it felt like a more unique experience, but didn't seem as extensible/adaptable to a variety of apps as other OSscenek

People/shareholders are taking actions:

"Microsoft to lay off 18,000 workers
A majority of the layoffs will be from the Nokia Devices and Services division, with about 12,500 jobs being cut. This is the largest round of layoffs in the company's history."

Nokia needed to do something quickly or experience a slow death.
The only bad news I see here is that there might not be a Nokia Windows Phone 7 device this year, and that's not good.

Nokia's phone design was always the most defensive out there. Their phones lost any traces of distinction many years ago and turned into "appeal to all and no one" kind of generic oem path. They were masterpieces of non-design, just like most Japanese cars to this day.
Their phones were always considered the easiest to use. Little they knew how they were about to be proven wrong.
I actually was about to buy an E61 when iPhone came to save the day. Can you imagine, this was the best smartphone on the market just 4 years ago? It had a proper browser and all...
I am laughing at myself and thanking I didn't drop the money on it back then.
- They had a few models that became classics but this was a long time ago.raf

- Good point, I remember when their handsets used to be really varied and clever. Then they all began to look the sameanimatedgif

Microkia (Nokosoft?) will come out with an amazing, fully functional smartphone just as smartphones become obsolete.

LOL.. this was a coup.. makes you wonder whether or not Nokia's board of directors are all blind or just plain imbeciles.
I'll say this.. I didn't expect this type of smart move by Ballmer considering he's a class A retard.
even though it comes from an Apple guy I can't say I disagree..
Microsoft Buys Nokia for $0B

I think that Microsoft will milk Nokia's marketshare, patents and everything they can get their hands on. The next step is to fully integrate Nokia into Microsoft (aka kill it as they would have taken every piece of technology Nokia has) and eventually either build their own Microsoft hardware division for phones using Nokia's capabilities or just use Nokia's numerous patents.
That Apple Outsider guy has a very valid point.. Microsoft realized they can't be Google and Android, but they realized that they can apply Apple/Xbox Live model to the phones and Windows Phone 7.. this is where Nokia comes in for them.

Apparently a similar thing happened to SGI. Their CEO came on board (to MS) after SGI became a stagnant ex-leader of their field, and the IP rights to a lot of graphics technologies eventually passed over to MS (which were later used as key Xbox technologies).
