Competition is a good thing.
I think this could be great. Clearly desperate, but that doesn't mean something great won't come of it.
WP7's worst enemy is the timing and lack of phones (or knowledge of them, I still haven't seen it).
Android - haven't been greatly impressed with it yet, but I am sure it will mature
Future - 3 platforms with huge backings is going to be great for the consumer.

Technically, MS could buy Nokia with the cash it has. That would seem to be a wonderful purchase.
I'd buy MS stock if that were to happen. I'd like to see one phone made well. All these billion options of Android phones that does 90% well, but missing the 10% of gloss detail Apple puts in is just annoying (I want to like them, I really do, but they make too many to get one just perfect, imho).
This should be entertaining to watch. I hope MS does buy them out. It would be a breath of fresh air of competition.

Intesting piece of information from one of the people posting about this:
"Until yesterday Nokia and Microsoft were competitors. That's the thing that makes it unethical. As such it's not suprising that former MS EVP has lots of MS stocks. He should have sold them before taking the helm at Nokia.
For people who want to go all tinfoil; remember the rumour from two weeks ago. That Nokia's largest american owners forced the Elop nomination (http://www.engadget.com/2011/01... The really tinfoil part is that Nokia's 2nd largest institutional owner (Fidelity Management & Research) is also Microsoft's 7th largest institutional owner.

formed, I agree...timing and lack of knowledge. Curious to me that MS didn't do a marketing campaign blitz with the WP7 phone. Maybe they don't want to fo all out given availability of apps?
- They do have most core apps though. But people are taken in by high numbers, even if 90% is garbage.ETM

Windows Phone 8 is bloody good...much nicer feel than iOS and Android. Just suffering from a lack of Apps.
I hope this works.

How were they competitors? One makes hardware, phones, one makes software, and a few misc. pieces. I don't see any conflict.
Big business is as much about politics as anything else in life. There are people forced in and out all the time, obviously with particular interests in mind.
If you want to look at conspiracy, look at how is on the board for most of these large tech companies.

The only problem i have with this is that Nokia got scammed.. Microsoft basically took over the company for $0b.
This is the end of Nokia as it was before.. Microsoft will destroy them. They will take everything they can from Nokia and just suck them dry until they can merge them completely into Microsoft.
Nokia makes fantastic hardware. I used them most of my life in Europe.. there is no other manufacturer that made hardware like they do..
I hate what happened here..and it is basically a forced takeover because major investors in Microsoft are major investors in Nokia and they basically opened the doors for Microsoft to come in and take over Nokia..
- seems a little dramatic. Nokia was going to die...by their own hand.monkeyshine

Nokia is where it is at because of the leadership - they did not keep up with the markets. Any company that falls behind will either die or get taken over/bought.
If Nokia was on top of things, then they would not be in this position.
Peripherally, this looks good to me:
Nokia - solid history, just got caught off guard, good quality
MS - soso implementation and execution of many products, lacks any 'sex' appeal
Seems like a pretty good matchup.
- their partnership makes absolutely no sense in terms of what Nokia needs.. Microsoft on the other hand needs Nokia desperately because their Windows Phone 7 is turning out to be another KIN.Boz

- But Nokia is dead, no? Besides cheap phones they have no upper endformed
- - WP7 does this, as far as I can seeformed

@Boz
Elop is CEO and it doesn't mean that Nokia has been taken over or scammed. Elop can be replaced just as his predecessor was.
- Boz0
LOL.. They kicked out President of Nokia in US and placed another Microsoft guy to run it..
can you say Microsoft take over?

A lot of people are walking out of Nokia in protest ..
