What's even worse than vague directions? No direction at all. I worked with an Art Director on a couple photoshoots who wouldn't give me any feedback. I heard a lot of, "Yeah, that's nice" and "I like it." She said she preferred not to control the situation. But in my opinion, that's the Art Director's job.
I want an Art Director who will bug me about every last detail and force me to work harder to get a better result.

Using coloured fonts makes things look like it was designed by a 12 year old....ditch the coloured fonts. (actual comment from an old AD of mine back in the mid-90's)
