Canon T2i
Just buy decent lens. Dont buy zoom.
50 mm 1.8 would be good enough to start.- true.... or a Nikon D3100 and a 35mm 1.8... or even a Nikon D90 and 50mm 1.8vaxorcist
- Get the Canon T1i. The t2i has little advantage for a beginner.PositiveintenT

ANYTHING!
Well, almost any DSLR and a 50mm F1.8 or 35mm F1.8 lens... or a 4/3rds camera and a prime lens....
I have a recurring nightmare that actually happens..... as a photographer.... it goes like this.... somebody I know hears I'm a photographer, they waitl till I'm alone, then whisper and ask in a very conspiracy-like voice "So.... what's the a GOOD CAMERA?!?" as if it's all a secret buying choice that's all that matters.... I have to try not to react angrily....

you know why they tell you to get at least a 1.8? so you can have a shallow depth of field. because photography is ALL about soft focus. don't worry, once you get that flower in focus and the dog blurry in the background, you'll get all the compliments you ever wanted. just be careful. some people may think you faked the blur, they're "haterz" or just ignorant to the process. you go girl. you go.
- The 1.8 is an incredibly sharp lens for $80. Can't be outmatched.PositiveintenT
- LOL @ APPALLED
well done mate!bigtrick - sharpness is like the top speed on a car. for what you're doing, every lens is sharp enough.bigtrick
- If quality isnt a factor why even ask about cameras? Just go to walmart and pick up the cheapest one.PositiveintenT

@intVal, are you looking just to pick up a camera and just shoot whatever? or do you want ot focus on say, nature, wildlife, landscape, portrait, studio, low-light or street; or even all of them?
i had what was considered a high-end point and shoot for years. but it had manual capabilities that when combined with a tripod and some filters, really worked for my advantage. but if you are interested in more street, and portrait photography, i highly recommend getting a camera that can utilize shallow DOF.
I recently got my first dslr, a d700, and paired it with a 50 1.4, and just got a 24-120 f/4 yesterday that i plan to use on landscapes. but i have a feeling the 50 1.4 will stay on longer as it really renders a nice shallow depth of field.
the nifty-fifties that people have mentioned (50 1.8) is a really great starting lens for people and singular subjects.

I would recommend getting the Nikon D3000 body and the 50mm 1.8
Good start up kit and should be around $500 - which is decent
- Personally I am a Canon FanBoy, even though its about the photographer, having well thought out controls and a camera that feels right helps.ArmandoEstrada
- ...camera that feels right helps.ArmandoEstrada
- NOTE: The D3000 does not have an internal autofocus motor, which teh 50 1.8 needsvaxorcist
- so you can either get a 35mm 1.8 or the pricier AFS-50mm 1.4, or use manual focus
or get a Nikon D90vaxorcist - Or just get a canon t1i. The canon 50mm 1.8 has AFPositiveintenT

Keep a camera on you at all times.

Why is everyone recommending not getting a zoom? If that's what I had to start, my camera would have never left my home.
Personally, I'd find a deal on a DSLR with a zoom, something you can add good lenses to later (and keep them as you upgrade).
Most important thing is to get out and shoot. Have fun. Practice and learn. I'd get that zoom so you aren't limited in what/where you shoot.
- having a prime lens doesnt 'limit' you at all. if fact, iit will force you to think more about your compositiondesmo
- just saying it would have limited me - I liked taking landscape shots, then a portrait, etc., without having to know about lensesformed
- know about lenses. I understand your point, and that is great for somethingsformed

s90 + speedlight + pocketwizards?monNom - I'm not a photographer by any stretch, just my thinking.monNom
- That depends on what you want. You want high-quality images worthy to sell? Get a fast lens and a flash.TenaciousG

If you want to learn, and have no experience.
Get the cheapest DSLR you can find, and start shooting.Peeps here are nice, but they love throwing expensive models around for no reason. I've been shooting entry level dslr for a couple of years now, and I'm still learning every single day.
Remember this, the camera DOES NOT make the photographer.
and you'll be off on a great start :)
