Well that's well and good that he's creating an "homage to Bass," but how long does that go on for? Have you seen how much of the stuff in his portfolio and in his Flickr stream have the exact same style? Seems bit much to me to keep singing the song of homage.

Probably shouldn't even be responding, but I think Baskerville raises some excellent and really well-thought-out points that I would like to address. I think I did myself a disservice with this series by mixing obvious Bass-homages (Rocky, Jackie Brown, Blues Brothers) with others that I feel reflect my more personal aesthetic (There Will be Blood, Dirty Harry). Calling them all bass-based is a little unfair,
I am now in a position to have final say in a lot of what I work on, so when the opportunity arises to have fun then I like to take advantage - and I have a lot of fun working in that style.
Now, I would hope that people would look at the variety of work in my portfolio and see that I am not a complete hack. With my work, it's always the idea that comes first - then I work in a style that best suits the concept. I would hope that the ideas behind most of these pieces would be strong enough to stand on their own regardless of the dressing.
As for the distress, it's a print thing. These are pretty large in person and a flat block of colour straight out of illustrator just looks a little soulless.
But in some ways I agree with what you're saying. My current project is far less bassy (consciously so) and I can't wait to see what people think of it.

Thanks for the clarification, Olly. I think it's only fair to say that the majority of your work I've been exposed to before today was very much in this style. I definitely don't think you're a "hack" as you put it, but I did have concerns over the popularity of a style that was not uniquely your own (granted, you've exerted your own creative license in all cases).
I think it speaks volumes about you to say that the work if partially of influence, and that you support them with a broad range of other styles and designs.

I wouldn't worry too much about it Olly. At least half of the criticism being fired your way is surely rooted in jealousy. Sure, Olly takes some influence from designers like Saul Bass, but I think the strong reaction and coverage of his work shows that there is room for his more poignant, pop-culture influenced take on this style in today's design scene. Furthermore, if what Olly were doing was easy, the countless imitators (seriously, I see a new minimalist movie posters link practically every day) would be achieving the same popularity. The appeal of his work is more about his ideas, not just the aesthetic. Though it DOES have clear influences, Olly's stuff is far smarter and better than almost anyone else working in that style, the kid has something special, get off his back.

- Jealousy? Are you serious? I could take the Saul Bass style and run with it myself easily. You're a tard.********

Even though this isn't personally my favorite kind of thing, I think the referencing is pretty out there in the open - the whole point, in fact. It's a lot like a Quentin Tarantino movie where he references old martial arts or blaxploitation films and grafts them onto modern day situations.

Well put Olly, I've followed your work for a while which is why I was a bit disappointed to see so much Bass style in this latest series of posters, but the fact that you recognise that shows that you're aware of the issues there.
Nice job on the Boggins posters for Adam & Joe, that's how I first saw your work!

I have to say that I like Olly's work very much. Derivative or not. Look beyond the influences in the design and I see a lot of original thought and ideas in the contents of the imagery. Not just in these but in his portfolio as well.
Which is clearly why he gets so much press. The lad done good.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a little 'Bass inspiration'. And altho I understand where Baskerville is coming from, I can't say I don't like them.

Even if its an homage, its a nice one at that.
I say good job and looking forward to see some new projects.

I honestly don't see the issue. He's not claiming to have invented that style, everyone knows Saul bass.
I see it akin to remixing famous songs, the results are new and interesting but nobody calls them a rip.
