Probably shouldn't even be responding, but I think Baskerville raises some excellent and really well-thought-out points that I would like to address. I think I did myself a disservice with this series by mixing obvious Bass-homages (Rocky, Jackie Brown, Blues Brothers) with others that I feel reflect my more personal aesthetic (There Will be Blood, Dirty Harry). Calling them all bass-based is a little unfair,
I am now in a position to have final say in a lot of what I work on, so when the opportunity arises to have fun then I like to take advantage - and I have a lot of fun working in that style.
Now, I would hope that people would look at the variety of work in my portfolio and see that I am not a complete hack. With my work, it's always the idea that comes first - then I work in a style that best suits the concept. I would hope that the ideas behind most of these pieces would be strong enough to stand on their own regardless of the dressing.
As for the distress, it's a print thing. These are pretty large in person and a flat block of colour straight out of illustrator just looks a little soulless.
But in some ways I agree with what you're saying. My current project is far less bassy (consciously so) and I can't wait to see what people think of it.
