Plus, if you live fairly central the buses are pretty good in London and are relatively cheap. 30 mins from Old St to Covent Garden. £1.20

"650 quid will get you a box in an Acton Aussie sharehouse"
haha so true, fucking Aussies why come here if you think it's so cold and miserable. Although I think the French have overtaken them since the recession.Pretty much don't live in shared houses with randomers
- mm, much as I love Ozzies, I can't help but feel that the "Whinging Pom" moniker is more than a little ironic.detritus

I'd say unless you are monospaced, go to London.

Just moved to NYC from London... let me just say that NYC is a lot more expensive than London... the day to day stuff (ie: food) is so expensive. the great thing is eating out which is oddly cheaper... beer is pricey.. I find the rent about the same, but that depends where you are as usual... we're paying around $2.5k a month for a nice 2 bedroom in Park Slope...

Moving to NY from London. Been here for the summer working and just waiting for visa to come through. Find out in a few days. Exciting times.
London is great, Loads of creative stuff going on and very accessible to that level of culture. I've lived there for seven years and am ready for a change.
As an English person, it's amazing being here in New York and experiencing a new city / country. I find that it's harder to access the level of culture I'm used to, but that's probably because I'm new here.
If you're deciding whether move somewhere based on how much a bus ride costs then you need to have a serious word with yourself.

I did 8 years in London (Bethnal Green) and am currently living in NYC, and have been for 3 years.
Cost of living is comparable here tho' rent does fluctuate depending on where you want to live. You'll struggle to get anything sub $1000 on your own. 1 Beds in the city can be anything from $2k to $4k.
Booze is about the same but the tips mount up. Food - I tend to eat take out a lot as there isn't the supermarkets you get in London (No Sainsbury's / Tesco metro.)
Travel is a lot cheaper. Both cabs and subway about 1/3rd of London.
I really liked London but I love NYC.

I lived in NYC for 8 years before moving to London last fall. I have found the following:
Food is better in New York. Hands down. London has some great restaurants and markets, but its just not as good and diverse and cheap as eating out in New York.
New York has the potential to be cheaper. You can get some really good cheap food which just doesn't exist out here.
Groceries in London are generally cheaper...5 avocados for £1. never in new york.
Transportation in New York is cheaper, more convenient and overall better. London is just more spread out, so you most likely will have to travel further to get places.
Rents vary for both places. $1K will get you a decent room in a flat or house in London, with a strong likelihood that it will come with a garden, which is mostly unheard of in NYC. However, bills can add up, where in NY, heat is usually included.
If you're an apartment snob like I am, you might be unpleasantly surprised by the amount of apartments that are *gasp* carpeted!!! Its hard to compare incomes when the £/$ exchange rates keep changing, but its definitely not much better than NYC.
Freelancing is easier in London since you don't need to worry about health insurance.
And finally, you are a 2 hour train ride from Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels. You can pay £40 RT for a flight to Mallorca, Rome, Stockholm, or anywhere else Ryanair flies to. Its pretty amazing to live in another country!

i forgot the best thing about London...its not new york. its not obvious. you can't walk down the street without knowing where you're going and expect to find it. London is a city where you are constantly discovering new things. There are so many interesting nooks and crannies (as well as crooks and trannies) that subtly reveal themselves...its truly lovely.
- +1, sums up why I prefer the likes of London and Tokyo to New YorkPIZZA
