I did 8 years in London (Bethnal Green) and am currently living in NYC, and have been for 3 years.
Cost of living is comparable here tho' rent does fluctuate depending on where you want to live. You'll struggle to get anything sub $1000 on your own. 1 Beds in the city can be anything from $2k to $4k.
Booze is about the same but the tips mount up. Food - I tend to eat take out a lot as there isn't the supermarkets you get in London (No Sainsbury's / Tesco metro.)
Travel is a lot cheaper. Both cabs and subway about 1/3rd of London.
I really liked London but I love NYC.
