Anyone live in London, lived in both?
Considering moving to London, but wondering how the cost of living compares to the states?
I wouldn't want to spend more than $1000 a month US on rent, and wondering if that gets you more than a room in a decent area.
Cost of food? Subway hours?

650 quid will get you a box in an Acton Aussie sharehouse.. if that.
- mnmlst0
um, 1k a month will get you storage space in NYC unless you want roommates.
- fredddddd0
$1K can get a room in NYC, I know that. Looking for info on London.

Meffid, do you really think so? I paid $160 quid p/week for a huge pimping room in a lovely West Hampstead apartment, all bills included.
I think 650 quid per month is quite adequate to get something nice around the edge of zone 1 / zone 2 from my past London experience.

London is more expensive per sq ft.
but NYC is a much better city.
- meffid0
RIZ, Yeah WestHam it's possible. At least an hour each way to work and back if you don't live right next door.
Haven't been to NY, but a few years in London. I'd never live there again. Nice to visit though.

Good to see hedge back in full swing after being told if we even mentioned him, we'd be banned.
- One of you must have said his name three times in the mirror. >:(Continuity

The missus and I were paying 320 quid per week for a really large one bedroom flat in West Hampstead. Before that, we were paying 270 for a shoebox one bedroom, again in West Hampstead....we really liked WH

Well I guess salaries must be more

If you're a designer, London for sure, the sheer volume of good studios vs the handful of ones in NYC, surely must outweigh the potential higher cost of living...
- hedge0
Salaries in NYC can be just as high as London, exchange rates notwithstanding.
In my first year out of college I got a few offers from the major players in NYC. I accepted the best (and highest paying) offer from Salomon Brothers at $75,000 USD base. Obviously this was a while back (1999-2000) but it's relative.

you will have to rent a room.
also, don't think they will pay you great just cause your in the "BIG" city. there plenty of cheap bastards. no matter how good you are.
there are pluses and minuses with all cities.
- akrokdesign0
also, don't forget that you might need a work permit.

Whichever city you choose, be absolutely positive to have a conservative blue or charcoal grey suit on hand for your interview(s).
I cannot tell you how many interviewees I have cut due to their [lack of] good physical appearance and style. You don't have to dress pristine every day if you get the job, but please wear such an outfit on the interviews you go to.
- So what you’re saying is you wouldn’t hire anyone whose ass you wouldn’t fuck.MrOneHundred
- you not a designer?fredddddd

Just to shed a bit of perspective on things, a friend (actually long-time ex) of mine in London passed me this salary survey for London:
http://www.adrem.uk.com/media/up…
She mentioned salaries actually went down 20% to 25% from 2008, so keep this in mind when considering London, which is one of the most expensive cities in the world.
- Salary survey for the UK, rather.Continuity

I used to pay about £900 for a little one bed in flat in Old St.
You can cut it a little more by moving to a shite area but not a lot more...at the mo, I live near Chelsea (Fulham) and I'm paying 1,3K for a massive 2 bed flat with a garden. If you don't like sharing think about spending at least £1K in rent. You can also live outside London and commute by train. To give you an example, you can be in 30 mins in central London catching a train from Reading... and rents are about 40% cheaper.
ALSO... London is no longer THAT expensive compared with other countries where I lived. I goes down to what do you like spending your money at. Transport is awfully expensive, so is housing. The rest is ok.
I must say that I like it here a lot more than NY, and the design market is great. One thing... bear in mind you will need no less than a few month to learn to speak in proper English!

what's the price for a single journey on the NY subway? Does it beat £3.10?
