I used to pay about £900 for a little one bed in flat in Old St.
You can cut it a little more by moving to a shite area but not a lot more...at the mo, I live near Chelsea (Fulham) and I'm paying 1,3K for a massive 2 bed flat with a garden. If you don't like sharing think about spending at least £1K in rent. You can also live outside London and commute by train. To give you an example, you can be in 30 mins in central London catching a train from Reading... and rents are about 40% cheaper.
ALSO... London is no longer THAT expensive compared with other countries where I lived. I goes down to what do you like spending your money at. Transport is awfully expensive, so is housing. The rest is ok.
I must say that I like it here a lot more than NY, and the design market is great. One thing... bear in mind you will need no less than a few month to learn to speak in proper English!
