the t2i is large and I feel like SLRs are kind of getting old.
the future is EVIL.
Consider that fancy Panasonic GF1 with a 20mm f/1.7

How about considering a Leica?

Dude, if its your first camera, you don't need the latest rig, most people here are quick to call the name of the biggest camera out there, for what? for learning? why exactly? these cameras have tons of features you won't be using anytime soon.
My suggestion, get a T1i (now that the T2i is out, it dropped price)
I got it for $650 brand new, the camera is way more than I need (and this is my second dslr) with the money you are saving, you can probably get a second lens, or maybe a flash, or something else. The camera shoots video in HD 720 and HD1080i (at 20fps)I was using a 300D before that (the first Rebel) till like a couple of months ago, and that was more than enough to shoot portfolio pieces.
Remember this, the camera doesn't make the photographer, is the other way around.
my 2 cts.
Check user reviews here, and cheapest places where to get it:

Panasonic GH1.
I would almost bet you won't get a better camera for your
money. Does video on par (some say better due to faster continous focus) with that of the 5D mkII, takes incredible images with it's kit 14-140mm lens. There are also firmware hacks which are very easy to implement which allow higher bit rate improved video quality.
Don't forget the photos it takes are some of the best.
It's also more compact than a DSLR.

So you know I have the GF1 + 20mm and love it.
If you want a dslr style body check out the g2 and g10.Consider those and the Olympus micro four third cameras - e-pl1 is the newest, then there is the e-p1 and e-p2.

Seriously.... which exact camera doesn't matter much, unless the camera drives you crazy... and/or you're not shooting weddings in a dark church with no flash allowed.... or if you're really, really into video....
Just get something and shoot like crazy, maybe get an incident light meter if you want to think about light differently.... $120 on ebay for a Sekonic L308 or Minolta 3F
Try a bunch of DSLR's and 4/3rds cameras... see which one fits your hand and feels right..... if you're pixel-peeping, check dxomark.com sensor ratings....
Then get one prime lens, and a flash, even a generic old flash so you learn how to use manual flash....
Seriously consider a polarizer filter if you shoot outdoors much, and learn to work with it....
Note that unfortunately, Nikon D5000 doesn't AF with old cheap AF-D lenses....
....maybe a longer lens later... but learning to work with limited gear is oddly liberating....
Then learn how to light with 3 or 4 cheap old sunpak flashes + CTR-301p wireless triggers from ebay....

anyone mentioning leica M series in this thread is doing nothing to help the person that started a thread about $1k cameras other than confusing them.
Maybe another thread could be started called "Leica M7, M8 and M9: Post your pics and drivel here"
