Dude, if its your first camera, you don't need the latest rig, most people here are quick to call the name of the biggest camera out there, for what? for learning? why exactly? these cameras have tons of features you won't be using anytime soon.
My suggestion, get a T1i (now that the T2i is out, it dropped price)
I got it for $650 brand new, the camera is way more than I need (and this is my second dslr) with the money you are saving, you can probably get a second lens, or maybe a flash, or something else. The camera shoots video in HD 720 and HD1080i (at 20fps)I was using a 300D before that (the first Rebel) till like a couple of months ago, and that was more than enough to shoot portfolio pieces.
Remember this, the camera doesn't make the photographer, is the other way around.
