My favorite neighborhoods are...
lower haight, castro/upper market, alamo square/nopa, hayes valley, cole valley/ashbury hts. These are all basically around or close to Duboce Park, which is in between lower haight and castro/upper market and is a central part of the city. I find living as close to there as possible is very nice because you are pretty close to everything in the city. Making your trip out at night.
How old are the two of you and what are you looking for in a neighborhood?
Some advice for looking at a place. If you can bring a copy of your credit report and have all the information you would need to fill out an application right there. If you like the place, then you can fill out the application there and not have someone steal it from you by being faster than you... this had happened to me, it's totally depressing:)

yeah, the place we stayed in was great in alamo square. it was a pretty large studio with this great skylight. i would have loved to swing a deal with the owner for a month long...but the price was just to high. that area is so expensive!

I moved to SF on a whim a few years ago with my GF. We had never been there before, and only knew about two people there. We slept in the car for two nights, then broke down and slept in a hotel for two nights after some bums fucked with us the second night.
We lucked out a lot on getting an apartment. I can't say it enough—we got so fucking lucky.
My only advice is that you try to get your apartment viewings scheduled and done as soon as possible. Apartment hunting is like being in a douchebag-vacuum bidding war. Several apartments we looked at had people offering to pay more in rent, or pay double the move-in fees, etc. etc. It's pretty fucking cut-throat. There are people who have been living in shit-holes for years waiting for that "perfect apartment," and they tend to be the ones who are squatting the location hours ahead of their appointment to try and get extra face-time with the realtors to kiss up and such.
Pretty ridiculous! Best of luck, lvl.

The Mission is awesome, but always smells faintly of urine. (Probably because I used to pee on the street while bar-hopping, just like everyone else).

The Castro is rad too, especially since the gays really keep a gorgeous neighborhood. It is pricey there, but worth it.
- see 3 posts above. that is where we stayed the time before last ^. dolores park/castrolvl_13

the real question. what's your budget?
- well, i think we will need to keep in the $1400-$1600 range. cheaper than that would even be better.lvl_13

yeah.. I walked through the loin a bunch in the early 90's.... the number of people with chemically enhanced minds was far more than in similar places in NY or Chicago or even cities in eastern europe and southeast asia I've visited...
- ... and I'm talkin 47th and green line in Chicago....vaxorcist
- vaxorcist0
.. one more thing.. try not to it bother you when you run into a number of weirdos who think they're on a higher plane of existence than you just because they've lived there longer than you....
