My favorite neighborhoods are...
lower haight, castro/upper market, alamo square/nopa, hayes valley, cole valley/ashbury hts.These are all basically around or close to Duboce Park, which is in between lower haight and castro/upper market and is a central part of the city. I find living as close to there as possible is very nice because you are pretty close to everything in the city. Making your trip out at night.
How old are the two of you and what are you looking for in a neighborhood?
Some advice for looking at a place. If you can bring a copy of your credit report and have all the information you would need to fill out an application right there. If you like the place, then you can fill out the application there and not have someone steal it from you by being faster than you... this had happened to me, it's totally depressing:)
