I moved to SF on a whim a few years ago with my GF. We had never been there before, and only knew about two people there. We slept in the car for two nights, then broke down and slept in a hotel for two nights after some bums fucked with us the second night.
We lucked out a lot on getting an apartment. I can't say it enough—we got so fucking lucky.
My only advice is that you try to get your apartment viewings scheduled and done as soon as possible. Apartment hunting is like being in a douchebag-vacuum bidding war. Several apartments we looked at had people offering to pay more in rent, or pay double the move-in fees, etc. etc. It's pretty fucking cut-throat. There are people who have been living in shit-holes for years waiting for that "perfect apartment," and they tend to be the ones who are squatting the location hours ahead of their appointment to try and get extra face-time with the realtors to kiss up and such.
Pretty ridiculous! Best of luck, lvl.

- hey, what area did you end up in by the way?lvl_13
- Pacific Heights, literally right behind the Cal-Mart on California St. It's a bit pricey, but safe and clean w/ nice neighbors.********
