what are the chances that adamm and monospaced are actually the ones working with each other on this project? that would be the icing on the cake for this thread
- sherm0
@monospaced i suppose that I can "design" a site in paint too but its not preferred is it.
Either way i wasn't referring to you specifically... I'm just saying that there are considerations regarding designing for the web are not related to designing for print. So if you approach it with a print mindset then well u get what u get... or maybe u get something awesome...
Sure there is some overlap but there is skills that are specific domain to each type of design... do you agree or disagree?
That said, (and i'm not saying its impossible), but why would you prefer ID as opposed to Illustrator or Photoshop? When I think about ID I think about PURE print work. (Catalogs, books, mags and the like)
signed a lazy web "coder" that will blow ur mind with the laziness that I spew out at 4:30AM while ur counting sheep.
plus calm down, I'm proud of your skills also. :)

InDesign for web. "It stays"
hahahaha I'm funny!

indesign = print
don't even like getting wed visuals in Illustrator.
Nice layered, grouped Photoshop file please.
Its gonna be bitmap on the web so make it bitmap from the start.Very annoying.
- About as basic as it gets.d_rek

- lol that's pure lazinessmonospaced
- this guy is super lazy.sherm
- @ Mono: Why? If it needs to be in a certain format in the end, why not start out planning for that? Instead of 'converting' later on...Bargels
- because I dont' design in CSSmonospaced
- I don't design in print. So should I design a layout in HTML and have you convert it for print?404NotFound
- Don't like web in photoshop either, fireworks!PIZZA

@sherm
I know you weren't addressing me directly, but I still stand by everything I said. The fact of the matter is that if a web jockey is building a site from my design, they aren't actually copying and pasting from my files. They generate live text and layout purely through CSS code and can copy/paste images just like they do from any Adobe software.
Now, to say a print designer can't work for the web is just straight up ignorant. In my experience, long-standing web guys are stuck to principles and familiarity. It's the print designers who are actually pushing the envelope and breaking the monotonous, generic, web work that we see everyday.
I prefer InDesign because it's not just for print. It exports HTML and files for Dreamweaver. It allows for Flash animations built in and several other web-savvy tools. If one of my developers complained about working with my InDesign files, I would go about having them replaced. Just my two cents.
- oh yea?sherm
- just messin around. cool. :)sherm
- You really are a smug piece of shit, aren't you?Mr_Know

@monospaced
We are all thankful for you pushing the envelope of web design, but
we are all in the same field and you make it harder for other people to do their job.Learn the right tools and learn some HTML/CSS, they are not hard and it will only make you a better designer.

i think the new web platforms like wordpress, expressions engine, drupal at al are homogenizing the fuck out of design in general. jquery this and jquery that, loading 1000 lines of code to do what should be done in 20.. but the designers are always the bad guys cause we don't know the 'rules'.. wtf is that shit. man the web was a much cooler place 8 years ago when everyone was cutting loose with tables and flash. *shakes cane....
- sherm0
@BonSeff WTF? don't talk about JQuery. it actually does the opposite, turning hundreds of lines of shitty JS into something actually usable and maintainable.
- JSK0
This thread is the reason why I hate designers.
- i_monk0
I'm a print designer and I agree. I rarely ever design for the web, but when I do it's in PS or AI to PS. The only reason I can think of for wanting to use ID is if you have some highly specific formatting for the text (this "CSS" stuff you kids are all about), but you wouldn't expect the web monkey to build the site from that file, just have it for reference.
- BonSeff0
Rand and me have been drinking at the DFW.
Shitasses.
- BonSeff0
what difference does it make if it is an indesign file or on a etchasketch? code that piss up.
- d_rek0
Monospaced,
Here you are talking about lazy developers but can't that same logic be applied to the designer who refuses to use the right tool for the job simply because they're 'more comfortable' using something else? That's pretty hypocritical.
Sure, you can use a website 'designed' with Indesign as reference material for a website but outside of text how do you expect a developer to be able to translate imagery/graphics from indesign into an appropriate web format? Images and graphic that cannot be achieved with code must be optimized for the web - meaning it must go through a process that compresses or compromises image quality. You cannot simply 'copy+paste' images and graphics into code.
- Don't web designers know how to save images for the web? They have it easy, it doesn't work in the other direction.i_monk
- No shit. They copy and paste into Photoshop and optimize that shit because they aren't designers! They're code jockeys.monospaced
- d_rek0
So in otherwords the developer is the one held to the double-standard? Fuck them it's they're job to make it work any way possible? And it's not really the designers job to make sure their designs translate into a pixel-based environment accurately?
I'm sorry but that sounds like an incredibly naive view of the subject.
- I still design to the right size in InDesign, but I won't waste my time creating all this shit in PS, that's for fucking sure.monospaced
- JSK0
Where are yours folios?
- Rand0
just add more money to your bid for translating a site from InDesign, your lordship
