Print designers building websites in InDesign and expecting web designers to magically build them and make them work. Then have them say "So should I build this for you in illustrator or InDesign?"
Thank you.

ha ha, that's an age old problem. form versus function.

actually...I agree.

The medium it's created in shouldn't have anything to do with your skills with CSS and html, or did I miss something?

Well if a print designer has no idea about css, html, divs, or anything on that basic level, yes it can effect the design and level of expectancy for there "vision".
- well said! but not well written.11
- My point being that with the advent of newer technologies like jQuery, html5 and css3 it should be relatively easy toMr_Know
- make any print design work in html. Hell, you don't even have to make it move.Mr_Know
- Perhaps I'm ignorant as to what they are asking you to do, but i can't think of anything that would be difficultMr_Know
- I get that alot!adamm
- Why not just do it in illy or ps?DrBombay

i do it in photoshop. is that ok?

maybe extracting elements could be a nightmare from In design vs layered elements in Photoshop , but I am hardly ever lucky enough to get any file , it is usually a napkin with blue marker

Ask them if they can make their printed stuff interactive.

Me: so what is the dimension of the site, pixel wise?
Designer: Umm, not sure. Its layed out portrait size, 8.5x11 and centered.
Me: Hmm, ok. Well that may be a little small.
Designer: OK, well just scale it up.

Wow. If that ever happened to me, I'd kill someone. I hate InD with a passion...unless you're laying out tons of copy (as in, book), keep that program closed.
The agency I used to work for designed only in Photoshop only for all web stuff; otherwise pixel accuracy would become a joke and the dev team would flip out with all the rounds of 'shift here' and 'shift there'.

I am so sick off...
Web designers building their business cards in Photoshop and asking how to convert their RGBs into PMS swatches for CMYK press.

I think your designers are the problem, not Indesign.

I agree that InDesign shouldn't be used.
But as far as illustrator goes, it is probably the best tool to create the layout, take into account I said "create" not produce. Photoshop will be best for the next step in production. But also there are many things to consider, I've seen many agencies set-up the files in Illustrator so that all avenues are covered, CSS, etc, and layers really well organized so that it makes it efficient for the developer to do their best on the back end.
All in all, just get used to it, because we are all moving from print to web in a fast pace.- How can you be alright with Illustrator and not InDesign? They're practically the same.monospaced
- yea, no shitBonSeff
- illustrator for gradients, photoshop for "pixel" things.adamm

I have to agree with adamm... InDesign will always give you shit when building a site, I rather know what to expect from my little pixels... Why is it that many people still use InDesign to do everything? Logos, websites.. etc.?
