90% of the difference between beers is just marketing.
What do you think?

"The number one seller in America is Bud Light, by Anheuser-Busch, with Budweiser trailing behind in second place. Most of the American beers have a similar light texture, pale color and unrefined, slightly bitter taste. People tend to drink American beer according to location, job or social standing more than any other reason.
Third on the list is Coors Light. This beer has remained strong thanks to a sharp marketing department that finds ways to overcome it’s lack of taste by idealizing its brewing location, but the ability of Bud Light’s marketing department to make Americans laugh keeps it on top."

There's some truth to it.
To be honest, I don't notice much of a difference between Heineken and Turborg, or Labatt Blue and Molson Canadian, for example.
It's when you talk about real artisan beers that there's no marketing fluff.

no. although i have been watching with intrigue how sam adams has affected the way Bud Miller and Coors advertise now. (miller lite is now TRIPLE HOPPED!!!!)

More accurate to say shitty beers are popular because of marketing

many beers do taste better than cheaper ones.
although stella tastes no better than any other middle-of-the-road beer to me

Watched the documentary "Beer Wars" the other day. There was a scene in a bar, where random people were selected, asked what they normally drink (of the big 3 breweries - AB, Miller, Coors). Then conducted a blind taste-test to pick out their 'brand'. None of them identified their beer.
This really only applies to those major, watered-down american lagers. The craft breweries are much more unique.

- I watched that, it was pretty good but seemed like a commercial for DogFish breweryfooler2

it's true of any product. in a way the product shouldn't be exquisite but average because with an average product it's easier to appeal to wast market rather then a niche that has a specific taste.
in other words:
mover average product = greater $$$ making potential

i find alll brands of beer taste very different, not like i can tell them a part but i notice distinct differences. I try a different brand every time almost. Its just that the ONLY reason everyone buys and loves certain name brands really is just because of marketing. Its all shit beer on TV, you drink good beer for a bit then taste coorse light and you'll gag.

who the heck drinks bud light?
when you really think about it, when's the last time you saw someone order bud light at a bar?

My dear boy, if you talk about lager then yes I believe you are right.
But there is a world of BEER out there that is not. England has had a diverse and very different brewing tradition and there are hundred of different bitters. My favourite three for what its worth.

"90% of the difference between beers is just marketing."
70% of information found online is completely made up. Therefore, I can 100% agree with the first statement.

depends what you're basing that 90% on.... by type, or by amount produced, sales, etc?
I can tell the difference between BL, ML and CL as long as they're all cold... and they all taste like sh*t anyways
- CockDiesel0
Really? Rogue, Lauganitas, Dogfish Head, Deschutes... You are mistaken. I haven't had a Bud/Miller/Sam Adams in 5 years. It depends on where you live. Bud/Miller don't exist in the northwest. Most of the west coast is supported by smaller breweries. Florida bars are given money to keep bud/miller in front. Budweiser has a terrible aftertaste. Therefore, they released Bud Select ( "it has a clean finish" i.e. doesn't leave the terrible aftertaste). The difference in beer is quantity vs. quality.
