GPS for me. That's really it though. I went without any kind of cell phone for 30 years.

I have no smartphone...
I have no watch...
I exist purely in THE REAL WORLD (heard of it?) and occasionally visit QBN, checking a landline randomly to keep up with my parents.
This is truly living... I am my own man and rely on no deVICEs other than the CPU on which I make my income in order to afford shelter, sustenance and the odd wobbly pop/joint ...
; )
- Why would I want a smart phone? That would assume I'm a stupid person...ideaist

- I thought the same way until about 6 months ago. But it makes traveling so much easier.ETM

Yeah, I know where you're coming from ideaist. I only have an a bog standard Nokia .. which I use for calls and texts.
The find the idea of a smart phone appealing - mainly because I'm a geek. But I'm not convinced whether I'd truly make the most of one. My MP3 player can play videos .. but I don't think I'd ever watch a film on it. I think the same might be true for the extra features of a smart phone.
I'm very tempted though.

Having an iphone versus a regular cell phone made me make less voice calls and use texting/email more often. I don't enjoy talking on the phone much so this worked out well for me.

Tweetie, email, facebook, maps/GPS, skype, browser.
Thinking about it they are kind of extensions of the basic function of a telephone which is to communicate with other people.
Don't think I would say I wouldn't want to live without any of them but they are useful and entertaining at least.

YouTube to watch videos while on sat on the toilet.
10 minutes is just right.
I've gone through several series of tv shows that I've liked.

I check live train info on mine. Read Instapaper. Use a dictionary. Play pool. Manage my tasks. What else do you need?

Definitely e-mail and calender! Additional apps are nice as well. Im currently working with the galaxy s on Android but I m thinking about switching to the new Omnia 7 see: www.samsung-omnia7.com
Windows Phone 7 doesn;t come with a lot of apps though.

Well, obviously I lived for years and years without a smartphone. So, I know it can be done.
But why would I want to go back to that?
Why are people constantly asking questions about traveling backwards, technologically? "What would you do without a cell phone?" "What would you do without a HD TV?" "What would you do without layers in PhotoShop?" "Could you live with less RAM?"
Who fucking cares? I'm not going back to the old days before we had that stuff. And who the fuck is?

interestingly no one has mentioned the ipod/music app, which was one of the only features at the beginning. i don't really use the ipod app though.

I use Instapaper, Things, 3 local train schedule and tracking apps, F1 app, Stanza, Kindle, WeDict, iPod, Camera, Dropbox, Twitter, Mail, Safari. The phone feature is just one of the apps, despite of being marketed as the main one.

After posting this, a few months later I bought one. I wasn't sure it would be very useful .. but I do actually use it a hell of a lot.
Cooking -> Epicurious app for recipes
Music Mod -> replaced my mp3 player
My Tracks -> track my running
GTasks -> organise my tasks
Calender -> organise my life
Gmail -> Email
Dolphin Browser -> web
UKRails -> train times
Navigation -> GPS / cycle routes
AndChat -> irc
SMS Schedule -> send the SMSs I need to send at the right time
Linode Android -> control my VPS instances
ConnectBot -> connect to servers using SSH
BBC News / NYT / HackerNews -> news
Ebay -> ebay stuff
WIFI Tether -> use my mobile's internet with my laptop over wifiIt's amazingly useful. Bit worried about becoming too dependent - but then it's the same for computers. If computers weren't around I'd be in trouble - I'd need a new job for a start.
