I have a MacBook Pro. Out of curiosity I'm pricing up a faster / more powerful PC equivalent. Can any PC users here reccommend a make / place I should be looking at to do this?

how much did you pay for your macbook setup?

Whatever you get just make sure it has the latest family of Intel processor, most of the big brands have released models with i5 and i7 processors now, just don't get duped into getting an older Core 2 Duo or something, the i5s and i7s fly.
I wouldn't normally plug Sony but I saw one of these last week and it had a high-res screen and an i7 chip... a very nice machine

yeah seen them, look good, and look ok for PC I think.

it depends what you intend to use it for. Is speed is more important than portability? But as BuddaHat said make sure you have i5 or i7.
Just to let you know rumors are Apple announces new line up of Macbook Pros tomorrow - April 13

I have a vaio, never had a problem
for that price you can get the highest one on the line and throw in a second screen,
I haven't tried anything else so I can't be judmental

I will be taking it to work each day but a couple of extra pounds wont hurt. Reson for enquiring is that my MBP is slow. I'm working with fairly large, but not huge images. My HD is full of things I need most of the time. I want something bigger / faster and realise I will have to sacrifice looks to an extent. Budget is around £1000

After months of speculation, it appears Apple is finally going to deliver new MacBook Pro systems to customers. The above screenshot shows part numbers that Microcenter has received for new Mac systems. We've since received independent confirmation from another source besides Microcenter that those part numbers are real, and that we should expect new 15" and 17" MacBook Pros very soon. The image shows 4 different systems:
Apple System Good-USA $1799.99
Mac system #1 Best-USA $2199.99
Mac system #2 Best-USA $2299.99
Mac system Better-USA $1999.99These seem to correspond with three 15" MacBook Pros and a 17" MacBook Pro ($2299.99). The new machines are likely using Intel's Core i7 and i5 mobile processors.

Yeah, saw that, still though, for the price I could get a faster / bigger windows based machine that won't look as nice.

dell?

got one from here
http://www.novatech.co.ukwithout an OS was really worth it.

Vaio look nice but tend to be overpriced for looks. Fur coat no knickers imo pound for pound
- maikel0
if you are not overly worried about the looks of it, get a dell with a decent battery life spend the quid on spares.
You'd get an awful-looking great-performing computer. Sort of the digital version of an ugly girlfriend, if you know what I mean.

Dells are fucking shit. Sorry, I'm not going to bother qualifying that again here (have done many times); Just trust me.
Yes, Sony are overpriced, but they're well-built, usually fairly specced (for price) machines. I think my VAIO's about 5 years old now and I've had it running for up to 12 hours daily since then.
If I was buying again now, the only other brands I'd consider that spring to mind are Toshiba and Lenovo.

Toshiba and Lenovo - any particular models you'd suggest?
- mydo0
detritus. wow.
i'm not saying you're wrong, but myself and friends have all had the complete opposite experience. Sony's are seriously over priced and although they look nice, not much special about the hardware.was browsing hellish PC world the other day, the dells where twice the spec and half the price.
i've got a dell E6500, with all the trimmings it's solid. and the customer support on business models is amazing. 3 years remote assistance and warranty.
- I've had 3 friends splash out on top end Dell laptops, all to be returned, some more than once. Never mind the probs..detritus
- ..I've heard from other people about desktops and other returns. They're cheap machines, end-off.detritus
- 'end-of', even!detritus
- sorry - 'heard of' = I've had earburnt in to me, or had to tech support frends & family's machines.detritus
