i´ve been getting dell for desktops, notebooks, displays for years, works well enough. business support is very good, next day on-site tech support if necessary.

Get a Dell Precision Mobile Workstation (available through the small business section). Just as fast as a MBP or even faster b/c you get 16 GBs of RAM. I've also had Dell through the years for PC but use a new 17" MBP for everyday work. Their average home user systems are shit (and are priced that way too) but their high end workstation systems for Pro users are really good. Tech support is great if you do the small business account thingy (No wait time and you speak to someone who actually speaks English and not robot English).

Nothing amazing but a decent price for what you get.

It's got the worst name maybe because it resembles the macbook pro:

my wife got an HP laptop with a blue ray player, i don't know all the specs but it cost nearly 3 grand of her companies money.
I'm sure it's faster and has a bigger screen than my mac book but I can't even figure out how to transfer music onto it for her.
Unless you're used to a PC I would say stay with mac, those are idiot proof!

think you may find some reviews on wired/tomshardware for some good laptops. also check out newegg/zipzoomfly for options and customer reviews. if you go something like dell. you may want to check out their refurbs.

I once had a Sony laptop - it looked nice, came bundled with loads of shite Sony utilities and software which needed to be removed. The hardware was pretty okay .. didn't break - but it wasn't anything special.

My next laptop is going to be a Lenovo ThinkPad W510 or W700.

Whatever you choose, spend the $ for the extended warranty.

I've been doing some research on that and they're actually selling you what you already have, in the UK anyway. "fit for purpose' covers electrical things for IRO 5 yrs anyway - replacement refund or fix.

Sony, Toshiba, Samsung - go for pro models not low-end consumer. I've had 3 Sony Vaios - all great - once you remove all the shit sony puts on em. My current Sony on Windows 7, 4gb is lovely... only £700.

I love my old thinkpad... but it's ancient, IBM-era, got it on Craigslist for $150 and it works fine..... serious work is done on my hackintosh, but I type this on my thinkpad..... I save the $$ for monitors and printers....

I have a dell E6400 and couldn't be happier. Haven't had a single crash and it's quick as a rabbit fucking.

Essentials: ESET NOD32, CCleaner and you're set.
