Flash... I'm worried

I guess Flash dying off seems more plausible to me because I haven't really used it much lately...the first few years of my career, a lot of the work I did was Flash...in the past year, I've cracked it open maybe 2 or 3 times. But I tend to work on "normal" content-oriented sites and/or web applications, and not advertising stuff.
On the other hand, if your whole skillset is based around Flash, or you work for an agency that does marketing sites based in Flash, I can understand how you can say this is all BS. And probably you are right, for that type of site, Flash will be around a while longer.
For your average site though, it's becoming less necessary.
- what's an average site to your standards. Many of the large corps still have flash contents in their sites.dbloc
- The kind of site people actually use everyday?ukit
- I don't see why any of this this Alexa top 100 vs Marketing sites stuff is relevant. It should come down to whatever is the best tool for the job.kingsteven

- Relevant because when people talk about Flash surviving, I'm guessing they mean overall numbers and not just within a small nicheukit
- small niche like marketing sites or your grandma playing backgammon online;)ukit

@ukit - you said the same thing about not having 'cracked' flash open in a while back in 2006. (http://www.qbn.com/topics/41393... It sounds to me like you're not really a developer, much less a programmer who has ever really grasped the concepts of flash beyond movieclips, timelines, and tweening, and quite possibly has felt intimidated by the technology, particularly with the advent of as3 and its object-oriented approach. an industry that thrives on the need for such talent would certainly be daunting for someone who'd rather take the easy road and develop something in html and maybe some javascript or jquery. it makes sense that people such as yourself would just love for the technology to dissapear, but it's not gonna happen, no matter how bad you wish for it. sorry.
- SteveJobs0
btw, i know it may not seem so, but i'm unbiased here. if flash went away tomorrow, i wouldn't be too bothered. i personally like the technology and have used it a bit in my career. however, with all the rhetoric and unfounded comments, it is hard sometimes to not want to weigh in on the topic :)
- why did you call Adobe Developers lazy on the news if you do like the technology?SoulFly

Well, sure I'm not really a developer Steve, but that's kind of beside the point, isn't it? Most of us are not developers, but it's not like Javascript or HTML5 are necessarily any "easier" than Flash. Nor would most of the serious devs I know choose Flash over other solutions (not saying you're not serious, everyone thinks differently, but don't pretend that yours is the prevailing opinion out there among devs).
If it makes you feel better subsequent to that post I did learn AS3, Papervision, Javascript, PHP, and am now learning Python, so I wouldn't consider myself clueless when it comes to stuff like this. Sometimes I dev up stuff on my own, at work I typically am more in the role of overseeing the design and dev process, but the more important point here is that the number of projects I've come across where Flash is really an essential part of the user experience is fairly small. In the world of marketing sites it's much bigger, but those sites make up a tiny part of the web, and Flash won't live or die by their existence.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

@ukit
i've never claimed that my opinion is a general consensus within any tech demographic. i'm only claiming that your limited exposure with regards to flash hurts your arguments, which btw, sound bitter and very matter-of-fact.and i have no doubt of your technical prowress. i'm sure you're a fine developer in your respective niche - just not flash.

Mind you, if Flash goes away, I don't really mind, personally. Provided I can charge more on whatever platform comes next.
- ukit0
Steve you are making assumptions that just aren't true:)
Since you are interested, that post dates from when I was at a job where I did only visual design and UX stuff. After that I left to work at a startup where I was forced to learn all the front end dev stuff myself, including Flash. After that I spent about a year freelancing where almost all the work was Flash animation programming in AS3. But it seems to me that's largely beside the point - does someone need expert knowledge of the ins and outs of Actionscript to have an informed opinion on this subject?

"does someone need expert knowledge of the ins and outs of Actionscript to have an informed opinion on this subject? "
I would say yes. Because if you don't understand what the beast really can do, you can't really have an informed opinion. This goes for any programming language or web technology...
- either totally informed or not at all. great flash content isn't always made by developers.kingsteven

^^ Daniel Brown's Warp microsite for LFO - if you don't have shockwave too bad. This is 10 years old! and is 3D with motion blur + layer effects... This is all shit you couldn't do in Flash until 2007http://www.hobnox.com/index.1056…
^^ While I'm no expert on HTML5, I know you can create audio samples with javascript but there's no way to stream it in real time. Ok hobnox isn't huge, but I think it's ridiculous that any creative/ coders would want to see Flash's demise.- http://www.zombo.com… zombotech is all flash, if those balls stop spinning we all float off in to space.

I couldn't agree more.

Actionscript is a fully fledged programming language - your skills are commutable .. learn something else. Don't give up hope .. BUT ->

The point is this, kids: Flash being "better" only matters if that extra level of quality is necessary on most sites. If not, then it can be replaced.
Ask yourself why JQuery has replaced Flash so quickly for smaller page animations in just a few years. Is it because JQuery is better than or even as good as Flash in most areas? Nope, it's because in spite of that, it's "good enough" to the point where the other advantages (free, open standard) make it an overall better choice. It seems likely we'll see the same calculus take place with other applications such as video and audio pretty soon.
- you're still going to build a flash video player for degradation/ older browsers, why write two?kingsteven

I'm disappointed and depressed. Are we having drinks on the 10th?
Maybe this is a good thing. If this so called HTML5 lives up to the hype, maybe I can start at the same level as everyone and do a lot of cool stuff with it. Maybe even be a trendsetter.
I guess updating to CS5 is out of the question right now. At least I will save some money that way.
Oh well. Years and years of dedication for nothing.
What else can go wrong, Obama's healthcare fall through, or another 8.0 earthquake. This is a bad year. 2012 is now. Flash is dead.
