Watched this last night.
I forgot how good Keaton was at playing one of those ambiguously scatty characters. The whole films feels disjointed and somewhat confusing, a little like having dementia I guess, but the humour and intrigue carry it. Bit slow at times, but I really enjoyed it. 8/10- Looks good. Watched Pacific Heights recently and it's held up well.MrT
- It is shit. Had potential, but it's shit.crazyprick
- totally valid opinions as always crazyprickIanbolton
- Well, I'm a big, big Keaton fan. But this ain't it, chief.crazyprick
- let me guess - "it wasn't as good as you thought it was gonna be?"Ianbolton
- Wrong, dummy. It has a contrived plot, sluggish pacing, half-baked performances. Deal with it.crazyprick

- I love the way the titles of the tapes reflect these feelings, which are difficult to interpret at first. I loved itD4W33D

- I read that they built all the sets and painted them entirely in grayscale. So the actors would feel like they were in the black and white era.nb

Jim Carrey is a god
- I'm not sure I've ever seen him not making an intentionally ugly face. How did he decide to dedicate his life to that?CyBrainX
- one of his first stand up acts was just him contorting his face on stage. Not sure if it's on YouTube.futurefood

- My favorite Kubrick. People tend to mention the orgy scene but it’s pretty tame by today’s standards. Fantastic movie about marriage and infidelitynb

- There's some really interesting BTS chats with people who worked on the film and the 'games' Kubrick would play to get the performances he wanted...Morning_star
- ...Because the Kidman/Cruise relationship was so intense, he'd have them on the set on different days and foster an air of suspicion by talking bullshit to bothMorning_star

As a teen I was afraid to watch The Vanishing (original 1988 version).
Had been genuinely disturbed by other movies, and Kubrick considering it to be one the most terrifying films he had seen cemented that feeling and my reluctance to watch it.Gave it a go in my 30s and got a bad feeling right from the start, and quickly turned it off haha.
Finally watched it last night on Criterion and it turned out to not at all be the film I had pictured.
Can definitely recommend it if you like thrillers, just stay away from trailers and summaries, they totally spoil it.
- I've watched it as a kid, maybe it would not hit me this hard if I watched is as an adult. Truth is: I've watched it only once, and I still remember it, well...rzu-rzu

- Absolute classic. If you want a weird case study on how directors dumb things down for American markets, watch both. The original goes in this thread.garbage
- The director's own 1993 remake goes in "Suggest a bad movie".garbage
- Totally is a powerful film, I was just surprised at how "welcoming" the form was, very engaging. Was expecting something very dry and hostile.spl33nidoru
- Thanks garbage, def curious about his remake, though it sounds like it could almost ruin the original!spl33nidoru
- Can't ruin the original, but you'll see what I mean.garbage
- I don't really enjoy horror films as much as I used to but from what I recall this was good. It can be interpreted more as a commentary on obsession thanyuekit
- just a standard horror.yuekit
- Agreed. I would say the genius of it is it's a reverse thriller. The villain is immediately exposed, and then watch a man become..garbage
- ..absolutely consumed by some mystery that the viewer has already solved, but somehow still kills you with the ending.garbage

Outstanding.
- worth watching but boy it's grim and downbeatGardener
- Sure is. Hard to find the words to recommend something so grim, but it's essential viewing I reckon.MrT
- Son of Saul is much better.crazyprick
- ^ great movie too, but quite a different take. I liked how this film didn’t tell you how to feel about the horror.MrT
- This is a great double feature with Son of Saul. Its the A side and B side, its almost a mirror image.DaveO

- One of them talked openly about walking around trying to kill a black man, and the other literally has a fart joke on his tombstone.garbage

- Politics aside, the only things they have in common are initials, gray hair and gravel in the throat. No way Neeson pulls this off.garbage
- Man, imagine condemning someone's work after death bc of a fart joke on their tombstone.cotton
- It will be shit, as I expect the Gyllenhaal Roadhouse remake will also be. Leave the classics alone, put writing before CGI and fuck off while you're doing it.MrT
- @cotton If you think I was condemning Leslie Nielsen in any way, I suggest remedial reading classes.garbage
- He used to sneak a fart machine onto morning shows because he hated doing them, and had "Let 'er rip" on his gravestone. Legend.garbage
